SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Alcoholism & Addictions Counseling, a Masters level course for the Masters in Addiction Counseling Psychology. I am pleased to instruct you in this course, which will be a vital course for the remainder of your studies in the Masters Program.

This course covers alcohol brain neurochemistry, discusses predisposing factors, genetic findings, stages of the disease, psychological effects of alcoholism, intervention and treatment strategies.

TIME FRAME: This course is a four-semester hour course. The course is allotted up to ten weeks and all requirements must be completed up to the ten weeks. If you end the course before that is fine.

TEXTBOOK: There is one textbook required for this course.

Book: Under the influence: A guide to the myths and realities of Alcoholism by Dr. James R. Milan and Katherine Ketcham. Madrona Publishers, Inc., Published 1983: ISBN# 0-553-227487-2.

EXAMINATIONS: You will have one final exam for this course which must be taken by the tenth week of this course. It will be composed of 50 questions which will be multiple choice or true/false in nature. You will do a ten-page long research paper on (what makes an Alcoholic and what are the stages of Alcoholism). You are to mention why people why people drink alcohol, stages of alcoholism, why the need for treatment, what is recovery, and what therapeutic modality would you use. Since this is a graduate level course you are to do your paper APA Style using at least 7 sources from the book. No more than 10 pages long.

GRADING:

91-100%    = A
81-90%      = B
71-80%      = C
Below 70% = Failed

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Define the role of neurotransmitters in alcoholism.
2). Describe genetic factors in alcoholism.
3). Explain which psychological approach works best.
4). Recognize why spirituality is essential to recovery.
5). Identify new insights into relapse prevention.
6). Discuss alcoholism treatment trends.
