SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Ethics for Addiction Counseling Psychology, a Masters level course for the Masters in Addiction Counseling Psychology. I am pleased to instruct you in this course, which will be a vital course for the remainder of your studies in the Masters Program.

This course provides an in depth look at ethics for workers in the addiction field. Included are ethics considerations as related to competency, patient's rights, physical considerations, and possible exploitations.

TIME FRAME: This course is a four-semester hour course. The course is allotted up to ten weeks and all requirements must be completed up to the ten weeks. If the student ends the course before that is fine.

TEXTBOOK: There is one textbook required for this course.

Book 1: Ethics for Addiction Professionals. Hazelden. Center City, Minnesota 55012-0176. 2nd Edition 1994: ISBN # 0-89486-454-8.

EXAMINATIONS: You will have one final exam for this course which must be taken by the tenth week of this course. It will be composed of 50 questions which will be multiple choice or true/false in nature. At the end of the book on page 77 you will find the section called "Appendix". You are to answer the 21, "Case Studies In Ethics For Addiction Counselors", questions.

The answer to each of the questions you are to email to the instruction for a grade. This is all that is required for this course to receive a grade. Since this is a graduate level course you are to answer each of the questions APA Style using at least two sources from the book. No more than 4 pages long when answering each question.

GRADING:

91-100%    = A
81-90%      = B
71-80%      = C
Below 70% = Failed

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Describe ethical principles specific to addictions treatment.
2). Explain the relationship between ethics and competency.
3). State ethics considerations of patient rights.
4). Discuss the relationship of fiscal considerations to ethics.
5). Review possible explorations in addictions treatment.
6). Identify the appropriate application of ethical codes.
