Welcome to Management Accounting Symposium, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelor of Accounting. I am pleased to instruct you in this course, which will be the final course of your studies in the program.
This is a course that examines the accounting field but also focuses on research. The course requires you to examine two leaders in the accounting field as well as a major issue that is current in the field. As an accounting manager today it is important to understand the accounting principles that you have studied over your program, but also have an understanding of the current issues in the field today. It is also helpful to take a look at today’s leaders.
I am confident that you will enjoy and learn from this class. I am here as your instructor and as a guide, please feel free to call upon me when needed.
This is a twenty - semester hour course. The course is allotted 10 weeks to complete. You must successfully complete all of the requirements by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the class or notify me that your book has arrived. Please keep that time frame in mind, as extensions or only granted in times of approved justification. Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded twenty semester hours of credit.
There are a few textbook for this course which you can choose.
Book 1: Your choice. This could even be an interview, series of magazines/articles. The final result should be enough information to prepare research paper on a current issue within accounting that managers must address.
Book 2: Your choice. The textbook must apply to a corporate leader who has risen through the ranks to either become the CEO or the CFO of his/her for-profit corporation . Select a leader who presents a strong background in accounting and finance.
Book 3: Your choice. The textbook must apply to a leader who has risen through the ranks to become either the CEO or the CFO of a non-profit organization or government agency . Select a leader who presents a strong background in accounting and finance.
There is no examination for this course, just three (3) research papers.
- Research paper on a current issue in accounting field
- Research paper on a Corporate Leader
- Research Paper on a Leader from non-profit/government agency
The grading scale for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
My name is Michael B. Leamy and I will be your instructor. I have been in the education/training profession for over seven years as an instructor and have been a life long student. I did my undergraduate work at Bentley College where I earned my B.S. in Management cum laude. I then earned my MBA with a concentration in Finance at Nichols College. Finally I completed my Doctorate of Education at Breyer State University.
Professionally I began my career as a financial accountant and when I went into management I became a Trainer/Developer. I have work as a consultant/trainer ever since and I really love being in education. In addition I have been an adjunct faculty member at a few local colleges as well as doing some independent consulting work.
On a personal level I am married with one son. I spend most of my time either working or with my family. I understand that family life, work and completing your education is a huge task and I have a great deal of respect for everyone doing so.
You are greatly encouraged to communicate with me. I have a very "friendly, open-door policy" Please email or call me with relevant questions and concerns. I would rather see you ask a question, than struggle or feel frustrated with what is expected of you the student.
It is permissible to accelerate this course. It might be challenging to do in a shorter time-span, but I am open to the possibility.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

3). Examine leaders in the field of accounting today.
4). Gather knowledge of corporate and social responsibilities for accounting leaders.
5). Explore values and concerns for accounting.
6). Establish the skills to conduct Research.
7). Present Research Findings.
