SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: ART 490 – Theories & Methods for Art Historical Research Practicum has been designed to:

1). Provide you in the Art History Degree program a practicum to complete the requirements for the degree program.
2). Assist you in achieving an actual, "hands on" experience as part of your education and training in the degree program.
3). Allow you the experience of working in an art gallery/institute setting with an identified mentor and with one-to-one supervision and counseling.
4). Enhance your market potential by presenting evidence of a completed practicum.
5). Allow you an array of experiences in the field of an art gallery/institute setting prior to completion of the degree program.

TIME FRAME:The practicum is comprised of 40 contact hours of supervised and mentored practice.  Students who successfully complete the practicum will receive 16 semester hours of college credit from Breyer State University.

TEXTBOOK:The book from the course ART 100 called--“Hidden Symbols in Art,” by Sarah Carr-Gomm, Duncan Baird, ISBN # 0-8478-2402-0.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I, Karan Schneider, currently teach certificate and degree courses at Breyer State University. I have earned my Doctorate for Clinical Hypnotherapy & Spiritual Counseling, hold a Master's degree in Art and Spiritual Counseling, and Bachelor of Business Administration. I am Nationally Certified and work in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Spiritual Counseling and Grief Counseling. My office is Alternative Health Care Modalities Clinic and I lecture nationally with full skill seminars. Currently writing books and CD's on the various modalities.

COURSE PROCEDURES:

1). You will secure a mentor in your own geographic location.
   a). Those who may serve as mentors include:  Any Gallery or Art Institute or Museum in your area. A minimum of 10 pages is to be written on the facility you will be working with, and will include pertinent information-not a marketing standpoint, such as historical value to the community, what the mentor/owner has achieved with this facility, how this facility will enhance your degree with doing the practicum here ..etc… b) This will not be included in the previous 10 pages written assignment, this is a separate assignment. Present a marketing plan for the products you have worked with, not to implement in the facility, but to be presented as your own marketing value for the products within this practicum, after you have your 40 contact hours in.
2). You will sign a non-employment agreement with the mentor and will work with a mentor for a period of 40 contact hours.
3). Your Mentors will assign you specific jobs/assignments to work on.  You will provide full analysis and other related information to your mentor.  Your Mentor agrees to receive the work product, review the work product with you, and assist you in acquiring new knowledge and skills in theories and methods of the stated work place. You will provide a log of the days/hours and duties performed within this period to also be submitted.
4). You may work on a variety of aspects of art historical research assisting. Also log your research, with any titles and references (use proper referencing- refer to APA guide on how to do this) that you had to perform within the hours you were with your mentor. Include a mock resume that you will submit for a position after graduation.
5). You will also have full access to faculty of Breyer State University for one-to-one mentoring during the practicum program.
6). You will submit to me copies of your full reports and work products created and developed during the practicum program. A 20 page minimum is to be written and reference the book from the beginning course ART 100-- called “Hidden Symbols in Art,” by Sarah Carr-Gomm, Duncan Baird, ISBN # 0-8478-2402-0. This written assignment will include your work being done within the facility and how the symbols in art from this book are related to the work you are proceeding with.
7). Your Mentor will be required to complete an evaluation of your work during the 40 hours of service.
8). You will be authorized to start work on this course only after successful completion of the first 13 courses in the Art History degree program. A 20 page minimum is to be written on your future goals that are related to the courses you have completed. How will they affect your work? Is an art gallery for you? Is there a quest to another country in the making to further your pursuit in art history? These are just a few sample questions for you to go by.
9). You will have a period of 15 weeks to successfully complete the practicum, Art 490. Extensions will be granted if needed on an individual bases. 
10). Art 490 - Theories & Methods for Art Historical Research Practicum of study is a required course in the Bachelor of Art History degree program.  You must register for this course and submit the appropriate tuition fee, prior to beginning the practicum.

PROGRAM STEPS:

1). You must secure a mentor for the internship project in accord with the information provided above.
   a). The mentor must sign the Practicum Agreement/Contract. Once signed, a copy of the agreement must be forwarded to the Program Chairperson at the following address:

2). You will have 15 weeks from the date of receipt of the signed Agreement in which to complete the Practicum Program. Extensions will be granted on an individual basis.
3). You are required to complete 40 hours of Internship under the direction of your mentor and assigned faculty at Breyer State University.
4). During the Practicum, you should plan on meeting with your mentor on a regular assigned basis. The times and meetings to be agreed upon between the mentor and you. The time you spend with your mentor is negotiable.  The time requirement of 40 contact hours includes time spent working in the facility and doing the assigned jobs. It also includes time spent with your mentor and with me. You are responsible for keeping track of your own time.
5). Upon completion of the 40 hour practicum, the mentor will be required to complete a short evaluation on your performance and work products. Evaluation forms must be submitted to me at the above address.

Upon submission of all work products (cases) and the mentor's completed evaluation, faculty will review all work and assign you a grade. You must achieve a letter grade of "C" or above in order to successfully complete the practicum. If you do not achieve a score of "C" or above must re-do the practicum. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the Practicum, you will receive 16 semester hours of college credit for the course, Art 490 - Theories & Methods for Art Historical Research Practicum.
