Welcome to BCH 450 the first of two independent study opportunities in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelor of Clinical Hypnotherapy. This is an independent research project which affords you the opportunity to utilize and demonstrate your research, analytical, creative, writing and or presentation skills. This project is meant to help you to expand your knowledge in a topic related to clinical hypnotherapy that particularly interests you, and or that you find especially relevant to your clinical practice, intended area of specialization, or future research plans. Once you have chosen your topic and had it approved, you will present a formal, written proposal for your project that will include:
Abstract
- Topic of Study
- Proposed method of research
- Proposed methods and media for presenting your work: i.e. research paper, presentation, Video/DVD, etc.
Preliminary review of the literature and media; proposed reference sources
List of preliminary references
Following approval of your topic and proposal, you will conduct a thorough investigation and analysis of the literature and media— books, journal articles, films, videos, and relevant online sources— then synthesize and present your work via the previously approved format—paper, presentation, etc. If you choose to write a paper, it should be at least 40-50 pages in length, written in APA format) that conveys your understanding of the topic, and as appropriate, expresses your unique insights, opinions and original thinking in relation to the topic that might be of value to your colleagues and foster the advancement of the profession. In clinical practice, nothing replaces the knowledge gained through practical experience; therefore students engaged in clinical practice can and are encouraged to include personal case studies and analyses as appropriate to support their research and theses. When presenting case studies and analyses, care should be taken to always protect client confidentiality.
Original thinking is highly encouraged and anticipated. This project is an opportunity to display research, thinking, and writing/presentation skills at a professional level, and to increase your skills as a hypnotherapist. Thus, when you present the final paper or project, it should be fit for submission to a publication or presentation to the public or a group of professional practitioners. You should also be prepared to orally defend your work; your research, logic, methodology, and stated position(s) in regard to the chosen topic and your results.
The independent study project is worth 20 semester hours. The course is allotted 10 weeks of time, but you may request and be granted an extension for up to 12 weeks.
There are no required textbooks for this project project, but if you choose to write a paper, it must be written in American Psychological Association (APA) approved format for student papers, theses, and dissertations as outlined in the “Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition.” Any deviations from this format MUST be pre-approved by the instructor or the paper will be returned unread. Therefore it is highly recommended that you utilize the current issue of the APA Publication Manual (6th edition) in preparing your proposal and final manuscript.
By this stage of your studies you are likely already in possession of the APA Publication Manual, but if not it can be purchased or ordered at your local bookstore. Your bookstore may have to order it for you. Or, you may purchase the book online from:
There are no examinations for this course; your final grade will be determined by the quality of your final presentation/paper and oral defense (if requested).
The grading scale for this course is as follows:
90-100 % = A
80-89 % = B
70-79 % = C
Below 70% = Fail
Your work will be evaluated on the quality of your research, synthesis, and presentation and or writing— content, structure, logic and flow is expected to be at a level suitable for publication or presentation to a group of professional practitioners or appropriate audience. Plagiarism intended or otherwise will be grounds for failure. Do your own work and cite the work of others. Write carefully. Grammatical and or spelling errors are unacceptable. Any spelling errors or serious grammatical errors will result in an immediate 10% reduction in grade. Chronic misspelling or chronic poor grammar will result in a failing grade.
I am available and delighted to support you through this process and I want you to feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, etc. as you feel necessary. I request that primary contact and communication be accomplished via email for ease and consistency, but telephone conversations are absolutely fine. You can email a request for a personal conversation and we’ll find a mutually acceptable time. While you will be expected to produce the highest quality work for this independent study project, I want you to enjoy the process, learn more about the subject you love, and feel confident that you can produce excellent work that advances your career and the profession.
