Welcome to BMC 220, “Public Relations Strategies”. I am pleased to be your Instructor for this course, which will center on five (5) specific components: an introduction to communication technology, electronic mass media, computers and consumer electronics, telephony and cutting edge technology.
This is an eight-semester hour course and is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded eight semester hours of credit.
There is one required textbook for this course,
Book 1: Public Relations, Writing and Media Techniques, Allyn and Bacon Inc, 5th Edition, Dennis Wilcox, ISBN # 0205-41849-X.
There are no exams for this course. Instead, there are five (5) components in this course, with several chapters that comprise each component. Upon completion of each component, you will be required to submit a summary of the component and assigned chapters in a word document. There will be five (5) short papers to be submitted.
You will be required to submit a research paper for this class. The paper will consist of a minimum of 10 double-spaced pages on three (3) topics of interest that we have reviewed this term. You must discuss these topics in detail and how they are applied in today’s business world. This paper is due by the 10th week of class. I will review and grade the paper within three days of submission. Please ensure you post the paper to me via email and in a Microsoft word document format.
The grading scale for this course is as follows:
90%-100% A
80%-89% B
70%-79% C
Below 70% F
You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we may have a scheduled group chat. Hello, students, my name is Jim Conroy and I hold a Master of Science (MS) in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Criminal Justice from St. John’s University. I am currently completing a second master’s degree in Public Administration from Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY. On a professional level, I am a Detective with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Toms River, NJ, assigned to the Special Investigations Unit: Economic Crimes Bureau. Prior to this, I was a Special Agent/Criminal Investigator assigned to working traditional organized crime and official corruption investigations with a state law enforcement agency in Trenton, NJ. And before that….I was a Senior Criminal Investigator with the Office of the New York State Inspector General, NY, NY. In that capacity, I investigated allegations of theft, abuse, and corruption committed by state employees and officials. When I first started out in the criminal justice field, I investigated members of the New York City Police Department for abuse of power, excessive force and other allegations of misconduct. I have a great variety of investigations in my background, most concentrating in the area of white collar and criminal investigation. I am also experienced in conducting crime scene collection, recording and evidence processing. I currently teach Forensic Science at the undergraduate level for Essex County College in Newark, NJ. I hold a certification in fraud examination, am a NJ state certified police instructor and hold status as an expert witness on fraud related matters.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1). Understand the role of digital, cable, pay television and interactive television.
2). Identify the use of personal computers, the Internet and digital audio/photography in today’s world.
3). Understand the purpose of teleconferencing, home networks, broadband and wireless telephony.
4). Explain the progress of computers and their use along with other cutting edge technologies.
It is permissible for you to accelerate in this course. You may chose to take the final examination prior to the 10th week in the course. Just notify me whenever you are ready for an exam, and you will be given access. There is NO mandate to accelerate. This is an individual choice that I will honor.
