Welcome to BMC 325, “Law & Ethics in Broadcasting ”. I am pleased to be your Instructor for this course, which will center on the legal system, the first amendment, the regulation of electronic media content, commercial practice and copyright and privacy issues. A strong emphasis will be placed on the study and review of case law.
This is an eight-semester hour course and is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded eight semester hours of credit.
There is one required textbook for this course,
Book 1:
Media Ethics: Cases and Moral Reasoning, Allyn and Bacon, Inc, 7th Edition, Christians, Rotzoll, Fackler, Woods and Woods. ISBN # 0205-41845-7.
There will be one examination that is required. The examination will consist of four (4) essays, and are based on the readings and your understanding of the assigned chapters of the text. The Examination must be completed by the tenth (10th) - final examination week of class. Upon providing you access to the examination, you will send me the examination upon completion and I will grade and return to you within three days. The examination is worth 50% of your grade.
You will be required to submit a research paper for this class. The paper will consist of a summary and comparison of three (3) cases that we have reviewed this term. Please be thorough and detailed in this submission as you will be required to submit a paper of at least 5 pages in content, double spaced, APA style format. This paper is due by the 5th week of class. I will review and grade the paper within three days of submission. Please ensure you post the paper to me via email and in a Microsoft word document format.
The grading scale for this course is as follows:
90%-100% A
80%-89% B
70%-79% C
Below 70% F
Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:
1). Interpret the first amendment.
2). Understand the legal system.
3). Understand the regulation of areas such as electronic media content and commercial practices.
4). Identify acts of defamation such as libel.
5). Understand the concept case law and how it is applied.
It is permissible for you to accelerate in this course. You may chose to take the final examination prior to the 10th week in the course. Just notify me whenever you are ready for an exam, and you will be given access. There is NO mandate to accelerate. This is an individual choice that I will honor.
