SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: I am pleased to introduce you to the course: Business Mathematics. Mathematics, the queen of the sciences, is one subject all students must become comfortable with. Any student with a good mathematics background will possess strong analytical skills that can be applied to any discipline.

This course is very intense and requires a lot of discipline. You will cover a lot of material. The course begins with a full assessment. After this, I will tailor the course for you.

At the end of the course you should understand many mathematical concepts related to business and personal finance including banking, payroll, simple and compound interest, present and future value, installment, amortization, depreciation, cash flow analysis, insurance, stocks, bonds and statistics.

TIME FRAME: This is a five-semester hour course.  This course is allotted 10 weeks of time.  You must complete all the requirements for the course in 10 weeks. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies.  Please be aware of the time frame.  It is rare that extensions of time are permitted. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

EXAMINATIONS: There are no exams for this course. 

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail  

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me.  I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course.  Primarily, communication is through email.  However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like.  Our classroom for this course has a “chat” room.  I am also willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at a mutually convenient time.  From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats.  You will receive information regarding dates and times for chat sessions.  Upon registration for this course you will be given my contact information that includes my Skype name and my telephone number. If at any time during this course you change your email address or other contact information, please be sure to notify me immediately.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are five written assignments for this course. Each assignment is worth 20 percent of your final grade. I will email you each assignment every fortnight.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I, Warren Seetahal, MBA, BSc, MCSE currently teach undergraduate courses at Breyer State University . I hold a degree in Masters in Business Administration, one in Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a major in Accounting, and I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. I have worked in many companies primarily being responsible for change through technology. I have served as project manager, ISO 9002 auditor and Information Systems Manager for many companies. I have been a swimmer and table-tennis player for the past sixteen years. I am currently pursuing RHCE certification and intend to pursue a PhD in Operations Research and Information Systems in the near future.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: You should possess the following skills/abilities by the end of the course:

1). Banking: checking accounts, credit card transactions, reconciling the bank statement.
2). Discounts: trade discounts, cash discounts, credit terms, partial payments.
3). Markups and markdowns: markups based on cost and selling price, perishables.
4). Payroll: gross pay calculations, employers’ responsibilities.
5). Promissory notes: structure, discounting interest bearing.
6). Compound interest and present value.
7). Annuities and sinking funds: ordinary, due, finding periodic payments.
8). Installment buying, rule of 78 and revolving charges.
9). Home ownership: mortgages, amortization.
10). Financial statements: horizontal and vertical analysis.
11). Depreciation: units of production, sum of years, declining balance, MACRS.
12). Inventory and overhead.
13). Sales, excise and property tax.
14). Insurance: Life, fire and auto.
15). Stocks, bonds and mutual funds.
16). Statistics: Mean, median, mode, dispersion, distribution.
