SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Professional Ethics, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelor of Accounting. I am pleased to instruct you in this course, which will be a foundational course for the remainder of your studies in the program.

This is a course that examines the role of ethics within the operations of business. The course examines views from individual, corporate, political, academic and other institutions. The ethical and legal responsibilities are examined for both individuals and institutions in today's world.

The course is structured to examine ethical issues from a variety of perspectives and challenge students to analyze the ethical issues from the perspectives of different stakeholders. Recently, the global world has seen many landmark cases that have been thrown into the spot light for reasons of personal and corporate scandals and lack of business ethics. That is why it is important for students to recognize and differentiate between personal and organizational ethics.

I am confident that you will enjoy and learn from this class. I am here as your instructor and as a guide, please feel free to call upon me when needed.

TIMEFRAME: This is an eight - semester hour course. The course is allotted 10 weeks to complete. You must successfully complete all of the requirements by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the class or notify me that your book has arrived. Please keep that time frame in mind, as extensions or only granted in times of approved justification. Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded eight semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course.

EXAMINATION: There is one examination to be taken in the 5 th week of the class, or at the defined mid-point.

The exam will be an "open book" objective type exam. It will be located in the classroom and you will need to email me when you are ready to take the exam. It will cover concepts from the first X chapter. You will have one day to complete the exam. You will need your USER ID and PASSWORD to access the exam. The program provides me with the exact times that you accessed the exam. It will also notify me of when you submitted the exam. Shortly after submitting the exam, I will email you with the grade that you earned on the exam.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are no formal written assignments for this course, other than the Final Project. You will do a lot of reading and personal analysis of the material presented in the course, thus I would prefer that you concentrate on learning the material.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: My name is Michael B. Leamy and I will be your instructor. I have been in the education/training profession for over five years as an instructor and have been a life long student. I did my undergraduate work at Bentley College where I earned my B.S. in Management cum laude. I then earned my MBA with a concentration in Finance at Nichols College. This year I am completing my Doctorate of Education at Breyer State University.

Professionally I have worked with the same financial services company since I graduate from Bentley. I originally worked as a financial accountant for a couple of years and then for the past five years I have been a corporate trainer. In addition I have been an adjunct faculty member at a few local colleges as well as doing some independent consulting work.

On a personal level I have been married for 4 years and enjoy spending time at home with my wife and dog. We are baseball fans and hope for the Red Sox to win the World Series.

COMMUNICATION: You are greatly encouraged to communicate with me. I have a very "friendly, open-door policy" Please email or call me with relevant questions and concerns. I would rather see you ask a question, than struggle or feel frustrated with what is expected of you the student.

COURSE ACCELERATION: It is permissible to accelerate this course. You may choose to take the Exam and complete the Project ahead of the 5 week and 10 week deadlines. Please contact me to make arrangements and confirm approval for this.

9). Establish the ability to distinguish and act in ethical situations.
