A comprehensive inquiry into the major components of social responsibility
including economic, legal, political, ethical and societal issues
involving the interaction of business, government and society.
This course
is designed to assist you in developing the awareness of the major
ethical issues which affect business decisions, and to encourage
a socially responsible consideration of those issues.
This
is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks
of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course
successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day
of week one will begin the day that you register for the course,
or the day which you notify me that your textbook has arrived
and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of
the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted,
unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion
of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.
There
is one required textbook for this course.

The grading
scale for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
Homework: 40%. Four (4) points for weeks
1-8, and six (6) points for week 9.
Case Study: 30%.
Final Exam: 30%. Multiple Choice.
The class week runs from Monday to Saturday. All work must be
turned in by Saturday, Midnight Mountain Standard Time. Late work
will not be accepted. You are expected to complete all assignments
in a professional manner. Academic honesty is the rule. Plagiarism
or cheating will result in an "F" for the assignment
and referral to the Breyer State Administration.
You
will select a case from the text and prepare a 15 page paper.
The text highlights the guidelines for analyzing the cases on
Page 652. Use the APA http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_apa.html
format for setting up the paper and use the three bolded headings
and the italicized words the text as major headings, sub headings,
respectively in your paper.
You
should address all four major ethical principles in the text and
discuss their applicable relevancy or non relevancy to the case
giving supporting reasons in the analysis section of the paper.
Homework must be sent each Saturday to my e-mail address.
Upon regristration, you will receive it.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1). Recognize and explain the major ethical theories
that are used in the decision making process.
2). Explain the basic characteristics of a profession, and provide
insights to the ethical codes that make one a professional within
a specified field.
3). Understand the basic philosophies of proponents regarding
corporate social responsibility.
4). Recognize the pros and cons of both sides of each moral dilemma.
5). Identify the major stakeholders and how they are affected
by different ethical philosophies use in decision making.
6). Identify the major ethical issues facing managers in the decision
making process.
7). Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using self regulation
or government regulation to resolve social issues.
8). Apply the necessary and appropriate steps to reach decisions
which are both ethically and socially responsible.
