SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to the Specialty Area Symposium in Health Care for the Masters in Business Administration degree program, a course that is designed to prepare the future leader in health care organizations for future roles in settings where leading the health care organization for continued success in times of change is desired. Health care organizations and services encompass issues regarding financing, scope of practice, ethics, reimbursement and accreditation standards that differentiate components of health care management from that of other service, retail or commercial settings. This course is designed to acquaint you with contemporary issues and organizational solutions in selected areas of health care in preparation for business leadership and success. In fulfillment of the assignments that will provide investigation of business issues, this course is designed to incorporate your own experience and observations regarding financial and organizational viability within the field of health care delivery and services.

TIME FRAME: This is a fifteen-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day that you notify me that your textbook has arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded fifteen semester hours of credit.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: There is one textbook that is required for this course, in addition to journal article research. There are some textbook suggestions listed below, but you may select an alternative text to those that are listed here. Please make sure that your selection covers issues such as cost-effectiveness or cost-valuation, program evaluation, reimbursement, budgeting, price/volume decisions or other financial concerns as frequently encountered in health care settings.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam. The mid-term exam covers some essay questions from the textbook readings (select one of the books, above, or your own textbook selection). The final exam covers selected journal articles dealing with contemporary business management issues in an area of health care of your choice. The details for these exams are listed in the Written Assignments section of this syllabus.

The mid-term examination is a subjective paper that must be a minimum of fifteen (15) pages in length, double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. I must download your paper by the end of the 5th week in the course. Upon registration, you will receive my e-mail address.

The final examination is a series of subjective papers that must be a minimum of fifteen (15) pages in length, doubled-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. I must download your paper by the end of the 10th week in the course.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

The grading criteria for the written assignment is as follows:

CONTENT AND LEVEL: 60%.
1). Content is pertinent, and reflects points requested from the readings as well as original thought.
2). Student position or view is stated clearly, with appropriate justifications and logic.
3). Comprehensiveness of discussion is adequate.
4). The paper adequately addresses the assignment in scope and content.

ORGANIZATION: Weight 20%.
1). The paper demonstrates logical flow from idea to idea, point to point.
2). The paper includes relevant supporting ideas from the assigned readings or research as appropriate.

FORMAT/GRAMMAR: Weight 10%.
1). Spelling and sentence structure are without error.
2). Punctuation and word choice are without error.
3). Paper contains a title, subheadings and paragraphs as appropriate.

READABILITY/STYLE: Weight 10%.
1). The paper reflects a synthesis of ideas from the readings and from experience as requested.
2). The tone is appropriate to the content and assignment.
3). Style of the paper is appropriate academic level.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are two (2) written assignments for this course. Each assignment consists of a fifteen-page (minimum) paper on the discussion questions and activities listed below. This paper must be double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. The first paper must be received by the end of the 5th week of the course. The second set of papers must be received by the end of the 10th week of the course.

MID-TERM PAPER: This paper must be submitted by the fifth week of the course.

Issues in Health Care Business Administration Textbook (one of those texts listed above, or your own selection).

From the readings in the textbook, please present and discuss the following questions.

1). Identify sent five business administration issues of concern to the health care executive or leader that were discussed in the textbook.
2). Clearly identify the components of business and health care that are present in each issue.
3). For each issue that you have selected, thoroughly discuss how business solutions can be provided or sought for organizational, clinical, patient safety, consumer protection, or practice issues that are part of the problem or dynamic.

FINAL PAPER: This paper must be submitted by the tenth week of the course.

Applied Business Administration.

This final paper is a set of journal article discussions about applied business management in selected aspects of the health care field. Select a minimum of ten (10) journal articles that present a business management issue in an area of health care that is of interest to you, your current work setting, or your future career. There are a total of ten (10) articles to be reviewed that are due for this final paper. Please answer each of these questions, and provide a complete citation for each of the articles being discussed.

1). What is the business issue of concern for health care managers? (1/2 pg per article)
2). What are the dynamics of this issue that can be influenced by health care managers or executives? (1/2 pg per article)
3). How would a health care manager seek to influence a positive change, either in the organization effectiveness and efficiency such as financing, pricing, budgeting, staff or process changes, marketing or formation of new projects or products, or regarding contracts, legislative actions, or alliances? (1 pg minimum per article)

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Dale Mueller, EdD, RN, has held numerous leadership and management roles in large and small organizations throughout her career as an administrator and consultant. Roles include leadership for change in chaotic environments, and management of teams, work groups, task forces and organizations. She is a gubernatorial appointee in strategic planning and human resources in California, and is a former President of the Chamber of Commerce in her community. She is a recognized business and community leader in the field of health care and public policy.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Identify contemporary issues of concern for business executive managers in health care today.
2). Discuss contemporary methods for decision making in health care today that involve cost analysis or other cost concerns.
3). Describe the application of solutions to contemporary business issues.
4). Analyze the purpose, methods and effectiveness of various management solutions in relation to contemporary business issues in health care today.

PREREQUISITES: This course is available only to those students enrolled in a graduate level business degree program at Breyer State University.
