SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides a study of Accounting Taxation Research as applied to business entities and trusts and estates. It covers the relevant codes and regulations as they pertain to taxable organizations. The course will focus on Tax practice, Tax research, Legislative sources, Regulations, Judicial interpretations, Computer research tools, and Implementing the research tools.

TIME FRAME:
This is a fifteen semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10- week period. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification.Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded fifteen semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course.

EXAMINATION: There will be a Research Project and a final exam in this course. You will need your USER ID and PASSWORD to access the exam. The program provides me with the exact times that you accessed the exam. It will also notify me of when you submitted the exam. Shortly after submitting the exam, I will email you with the grade that you earned on the exam.

GRADING:
The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: My name is Michael B. Leamy and I will be your instructor. I have been in the education/training profession for over seven years as an instructor and have been a life long student. I did my undergraduate work at Bentley College where I earned my B.S. in Management cum laude. I then earned my MBA with a concentration in Finance/Accounting at Nichols College. Finally I completed my Doctorate of Education at Breyer State University.
Professionally I began my career as a financial accountant and when I went into management I became a Trainer/Developer.  I have work as a consultant/trainer ever since and I really love being in education. In addition I have been an adjunct faculty member at a few local colleges as well as doing some independent consulting work.

On a personal level I am married with one son.  I spend most of my time either working or with my family.  I understand that family life, work and completing your education is a huge task and I have a great deal of respect for everyone doing so.

COMMUNICATION: You are greatly encouraged to communicate with me. I have a very "friendly, open-door policy" Please email or call me with relevant questions and concerns. I would rather see you ask a question, than struggle or feel frustrated with what is expected of you the student.

COURSE ACCELERATION:
It is permissible to accelerate this course. You may choose to take the Exam and complete the Project ahead of the 5 week and 10 week deadlines. Please contact me to make arrangements and confirm approval for this.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Respect and question authority.
2). Be proficient in the practice of Federal Tax.
3). Be proficient in upper-level accounting.
4). Specialize in a Tax practice.
5). Practice accountants and attorneys who need an introduction, updating or refresher relative to tax practice and research as an element of their career paths.
6). Identify strengths and weaknesses of material just read.
7). Understand how to write summaries and evaluations.
8). Prepare for CPA exams.

ASSIGNMENTS:  Your Research Project will be the only assignment for the semester.  It consists of thirteen (13) cases to be completed throughout the semester.  Please see the online “Assignments” tab for a more detailed explanation.
