SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to the Old Testament II CCH 180. This course is a more focused study of the Old Testament then O/T I CCH 160. The course will begin with a reading of Books dealing the Pentateuch, Historical and Poetic writes and the Prophets. You will then focus your study and reading in one of the four areas (Pentateuch, Historical, Poetic/Wisdom or Prophets). The Old Testament does not mean less relevance than the New Testament. Rather, the Old Testament gives the read an insider's glimpse to the relationship desired by God with His people, and the relationship chosen by God's people to Him. We can read of the victories and defeats, of the rise and fall of great men and women and God's continued steadfast love for His people. In this course you will gain a greater understanding for the why and how of God's revelation of Himself to His people through writings of the Laws, History, Poems and Prophets.

GOALS: The aim of this course is to familiarize you with the various writing genres (the message) used by the various writers of the Old Testament to give God message to His people, and to build man-kinds' relationship with God and God's revelation of Himself to humanity. Then a more focused study in the area of your choosing to broaden your understanding and knowledge in a specific area: The Pentateuch, Historical, Poetic/Wisdom or Prophets so that you may effectively communicate the message of Old Testament in the 21st Century to the Church.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Rev. Charles Davis is a graduate of Christian Bible College and Seminary, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Breyer State University , and has complete two unit (800 hours) of CPE training. He holds a BS in Theology, Associates in Divinity and MS Pastoral Care. He serviced in the US Navy for 14 years working in the area of Electronics and Electronic Warfare, this included three tours in Vietnam . He served as a drug and alcohol counselor, a Master Training Specialist and Electronic Instructor. He has ten (10) years experience as a Manufacturing Engineering Manager. Rev. Davis ' entered the ministry in 1978 as served as pastor, counselor, teacher, and chaplain. Rev. Davis has served on various denominational committees and boards at the local and State level.

During Rev. Davis ' twenty-five (25) years tenure as pastor/teaching/counselor/chaplain he has served hospitals and congregations in Florida , Illinois , California , Texas and Missouri . He is present serving a congregation in Kansas City , Missouri . As a pastor and counselor, Rev. Davis' counseling as ranged from crises intervention to long term; children to senior adults; families to groups and has involved counseling in the areas of (but not limited to) addiction, death and dying, abortion, marriage, divorce, and suicide.

TIMEFRAME: This is a ten-semester hour credit course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period.

EXAMINATIONS: Grades are based on completion of assignments and activities.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 69% = Fail

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able:

1). To identify and list the Books of the O/T, and the writings relationship to the four areas Law, Poetic/Wisdom, History and Prophetic.
2). To describe the various genre's and the purpose of message, when and to whom was the message given to within the 12 tribes of the Nation of Israel and relevance of their message to the 21 st Century Church.
3). To identify Israel 's relationship these writers: the Law-giver, Historical Poet/s-Wisdom and Prophet/s and the writers relationship with God.
4). To Identify these three major themes Prophet, Priest and King in the O/T and the significance of these three offices as related to Israel and the coming Messiah.

Objectives as related to Student specific choice of Study:
5). To identify the major writer/s and their occupation, relationships, reason for writing their message/s.
6). To identify the similarities and differences: in the writings, the intended audience, and the influence of the writings (message), then and now.
7). To be able write a series of four (4) messages from the student's selected writings, messages that are relevant to the 21 st Church.
