SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This is a graduate-level course in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice Degree curriculum (Violence and Control Track) and is designed to provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of sensitive topics and issues related to diversity and multiculturalism facing police in the 21st century. The course will provide insightful and well as practical information and guidelines on how criminal justice and law enforcement professionals can work effectively with diverse cultural groups, both inside their organizations as well as in the community.

TIME FRAME: This is a four (4) semester hour course. The course and all exams and must be completed within ten weeks. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course or the day that you advise me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame as extensions are very rare without special circumstances. Upon successful completion of this course you will be awarded four (4) semester hours of credit.

COURSE ACCELERATION: It is permissible to accelerate in this course. You may choose to take the mid-term examination prior to the end of the 5th week in the course, and/or take the final examination prior to the end of the 10th week in the course. This is acceptable as long as you make the necessary arrangements with me ahead of time. Just notify me when you are ready for the exam and you will be given the necessary access. There is NO mandate to accelerate. This is a voluntary, individual choice that I will honor.

TEXTBOOKS: There is one (1) required textbook for this course:

Book 1: Multicultural Law Enforcement: Strategies for Peacekeeping in a Diverse Society. Shusta, Robert/Levine, Deena/Wong, Herbert. Pearson Publishing. ISBN # 131571311.

Additionally, there are assigned lectures that coincide with the readings from the textbook. These assigned lectures are provided along with the course outline for your convenience.

ASSIGNMENTS: By the fifth week of class, you should have read the assigned chapters from the text and any assigned lectures, and be prepared for the mid-term exam. By the tenth week of class, you should have read the assigned chapters from the text and any assigned lectures, and be prepared for the final exam.

EXAMINATION: There is a midterm (completed by the end of the fifth week) and a final examination (completed by the end of the tenth week). Each will consist of 20-25 short answer questions that demonstrate your understanding of the assigned readings from the texts and the assigned lectures.

Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The examinations are "open book" objective type. You will have one (1) day to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam, you must send me an email and request to have access to the exam. Upon registration, you will receive your email address. I will then program your access in. You will receive an email back from me telling you that you are now authorized to go ahead and to access your exam. To access, you will come into the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and PASS WORD to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you have 24 hours to submit your answers. The program provides me the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. The program also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submitted your answers. Thus, the program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. Shortly, you will receive the exam in your email box with your computed score. You will also know what questions, if any, that you missed, and what the correct answer is. I also receive a copy of your exam and your score

GRADING: Final grades for this course will be computed as follows:

90-100%    - A
80-89%      - B
70-79%      - C
Below 70% - Fail

Midterm Exam (50% of final grade)
Final Exam      (50% of final grade)

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR:Chris Davis has a M.S. in Criminal Justice from Eastern Kentucky University (1994) and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland (1988). In addition to teaching in the program at BSU, Chris is an adjunct instructor in Criminal Justice for Campbell University and ECPI College of Technology.  Chris also teaches Community Policing, Problem Solving for Property Managers, Community Policing for Supervisors, Applied Problem Solving, and Strategic Planning for Police with the Carolina Institute for Community Policing and Wake Technical Community College. Chris is a twenty year veteran of the United State Air Force Security Forces and is currently the Police Records and Accreditation Manager for a police department. He is also assigned as the Second Level Judgment Officer for hate crimes occurring within the jurisdiction.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon the completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Obtain familiarity with the legal, ethical, and practical aspects of cross-cultural contacts.
2). Appreciate the impacts of diversity and multiculturalism on the justice system and society.
3). Gain a practical understanding of how police agencies can respond both internally and externally to demographic changes.
4). Gain insights into the theories and frameworks for understanding how prejudice and discrimination affect organizations and individuals.
5). Understand the reporting requirements for bias-based crimes.
6). Understand how law enforcement has changed in response to terrorism and homeland security.
