Welcome to CPT Coding, an Associate level course in the curriculum for the degree of Associate of Arts in Medical Coding. I am pleased to instruct you in this course, which will be a foundation for the remainder of your studies in this program.
This will be a course that builds on what you learned in CPT 170. It will assist you in continuing to understand and practice CPT coding. Medical coding is extremely precise and detail-oriented, so be prepared to read closely, recall your medical terminology, and demonstrate your knowledge of the subject matter.
This is a six-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the specified 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day on which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived. Please be mindful of this time frame. It is rare that I grant a time extension. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded six semester hours of credit toward your degree program.
There are three required textbooks for this course:
Book 1: CPT 2007 Professional Edition, American Medical Association, AMA, ISBN# 1579477917.
Book 2: Step-by-Step Medical Coding, Elsevier/Saunders, C. Buck, ISBN# 1416001336.
Book 3: Workbook for Step-by-Step Medical Coding, Elsevier/Saunders, C. Buck, ISBN# 1416001379
These texts can be found through the BSU virtual bookstore:
There are two examinations for this course: a mid-term exam and a final exam. Both exams will cover material in the texts, as well as any lectures or notes I post to the classroom. The final exam will may include questions on material covered in the first half of the course.
The mid-term exam must be taken by the end of the fifth week of the course. The final exam must be completed by the end of the tenth week of the course.
Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The examinations will be "open book", as you must refer to your text and manual for practical application. You will have one day (one 24 hour period) to complete your exam once it has been accessed. The program provides me with the exact date and time that you started the exam and also notifies me of the exact time that your answers were submitted. Please remember that the system will be timing you.
To begin an exam, you must send me an email. I will program your access into the system to initiate your exam for you. You will receive an email back from me stating that you are authorized to begin the exam.
The grading scale for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
You are encouraged to communicate with me throughout this course. I am available to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication will be through email, unless an emergency requires immediate contact. Our classroom for this course also has a "chat room" function. I am willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room when both our schedules will allow for it.
