Welcome to Computer Office Techniques! I am pleased to instruct you in this course, an introduction to computer applications.
This is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.
There is one (1) required textbook for this course.
Book 1: Discovering Computers: Fundamentals Edition. Shelly, Cushman, & Verna. Thomson Learning. ISBN # 06192022X.

There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam. Both the mid-term and final exam will cover the material in the books twelve chapters. The mid-term examination must be taken by the end of the 5th week in the course. The final examination must be taken by the end of the 10th week in the course.
Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The examinations consist of thirty-five questions each and are "open book". There are three types of questions: multiple choice, true/false, and completion (fill-in the blank). You will have one (1) day to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam, you must send me an email and request to have access to the exam. Upon registration, you will receive your email address. I will then program your access in. You will receive an email back from me telling you that you are now authorized to go ahead and to access your exam. To access, you will come into the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and PASS WORD to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you have 24 hours to submit your answers. The program provides me the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. The program also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submitted your answers. Thus, the program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. Shortly, you will receive the exam in your email box with your computed score. You will also know what questions, if any, that you missed, and what the correct answer is. I also receive a copy of your exam and your score.
Along with the mid-term and final, there will also be two graded projects. The first will consist of a short-essay paper on the topic "Making Use of the Web" and the second will also be a short-essay paper on "Technology News". Details on the topics will be provided in class and will follow suggested resources from the book.
The grading scale for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
Points:
Mid-Term = 45%
Final = 45%
Written Assignments = 10%

However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions are scheduled. Please keep my email address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. If at any time during this course you change your email address, please be sure to notify me right away.
I hold a Master's Degree in Computer Technology in Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I am currently teaching Computer Office Techniques, Introduction to Image Editing, and Document Formatting & Skillbuilding for Breyer State University. I have also been teaching Introduction to Microcomputers for Miami-Dade College in the Virtual College department since 2004. My other work includes running a small computer tutoring and website design company. My professional teaching experience includes over nine years of working with clients of all ages.
Last year I was honored to attend a formal interview in Houston, TX with NASA for the position of Educator Astronaut. Although I was not selected as one of the final three, it was a very interesting, fun, and life-changing experience. I still continue to remain associated with NASA through the N.E.A.T. (Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers) program. This includes being a science, math, and technology ambassador in the classroom. We give demonstrations on new educational theories and projects provided by NASA to other teachers. It has been enlightening attending these seminars with the other 100 outstanding N.E.A.T. teachers.
In my spare time I enjoy teaching flying (I am a Certified Flight Instructor), skydiving, training for triathlons, and going to "doggie school" with my dogs.
I have an open door policy in all of my classes and encourage questions, online chats, and peer discussions. I look forward to getting to know all of my students.
