Welcome to DCH 505, a doctorate level course in the curriculum of the Doctorate in Clinical Hypnotherapy Degree program. I am pleased to offer you this course which is a clinical study of the use of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy methods for use in a clinical setting.
This course focuses on the study of the therapeutic techniques of Milton H. Erickson (1902- 1980). Erickson was a Medical Doctor who practiced in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Erickson's therapy techniques were considered unique and very helpful to patients who came to see him. Erickson was stricken by polio at the age of 19 and learned to improve and heal his situation by modeling how babies learn, and begin to move their hands and legs. It seemed as though Milton Erickson was finely tuned into his client's disabilities, and/or issues, and was able to focus in on the underlying problem through a type of talking therapy, which we have come to know as Ericksonian Hypnotherapy.
Many authors have sought out this healer in an effort to breakdown this techniques into discernable parts that could be described and reproduced. Authors such as J. Haley of the Palo Alto Group was one of the first persons who introduced Erickson's techniques to the world.
Two other persons who sought out Erickson to study his techniques were John Grinder and Richard Bandler, the co-founders of Neuro-linguistic Programing (NLP). The pair later went on to publish their first book, The Structure of Magic, in 1975.
Erickson is legendary in the history of hypnosis. His writings on hypnosis are directed at the relationship between the hypnotherapist and the client. In a way his therapies are truly client-centered. There is debate as to whether Dr. Erickson was considered mostly a hypnotherapist, a traditional doctor, a healer, or researcher. In truth, Dr. Erickson's techniques were truly his own. Dr. Erickson spent many years developing treatment methods that may or may not have involved the formal induction of trance. Those who think of him largely as a hypnotherapist, might be surprised that he had a listing in the telephone directory as a Psychiatrist and Family Counselor.
The search for a therapeutic direction in studying the works of Milton Erickson, is a fascinating journey into the depths of the conscious, and subconscious mind. Studying Milton Erickson's therapy practice is to study a man and a mind which were, to say the least, unique. Milton Erickson developed unique approaches for individual clients. Many discussions and written works attempt to break his methods down into parts. I believe that students of Erickson's techniques can best learn by taking in the information as a whole; that is, understanding what it was that Erickson possessed subconsciously that created powerful indirect suggestions. Dr. Erickson was a man who lived through personal hardship, and in a sensed triumphed over adversity to become a leader in the field of medicine and hypnosis. Welcome to course 5 in the Doctorate in Clinical Hypnotherapy Program, it is my pleasure to help you through this course.
