Advanced Inquiry: Inductions

Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy Program

DCH 804

Breyer State University

Professor: John McGrail, Ph.D.

Syllabus

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to DCH 804, Advanced Inquiry: Inductions. In this course you will explore induction and trance from two important and integrally related perspectives that every practitioner must address and master in order to facilitate and ensure successful therapeutic outcomes.

Hypnotherapy is truly an amalgam of science and art. The science involves the biology, neurophysiology, and psycho-dynamics of successfully inducing and deepening hypnotic trance; aspects that every practitioner should be extremely familiar and facile with. And then there is the more abstract part, the art; the part of hypnotherapy that deals with the interaction between two individuals. In this realm we speak of more indistinct, intangible factors— rapport, beliefs, expectations, even faith, or lack thereof. These somewhat more conceptual parameters are most often framed by the paradigms of contemporary Western philosophy. Ours is a philosophy based upon empiricism and proof—“I’ll believe it when I see it.” To be successful in clinical practice hypnotherapists must be able to create and nurture an intricate balance among these dynamics. This course is meant to help you increase your understanding and skills on both fronts, thereby improving your overall ability as a practitioner.

TIME FRAME: This is a five-semester hour course.  This course is allotted 10 weeks of time.  You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period.  The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies.  Please be cognizant of the time frame.  It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification.  Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

EXAMINATIONS: There will be no examinations for this course. Your grade will be determined on the basis of three writing assignments; a Study Guide assignment consisting of mostly short essay questions to help ground you in the subject matter, and two research papers which may be combined into one longer paper (with my pre-approval) if you so choose.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100 %   =    A
80-89 %     =    B
70-79 %     =    C
Below 70% =    Fail

Your final grade will be based upon the quality of your research, synthesis of knowledge, and writing. Each of the three assignments will be worth one third of the final grade. At this level of study, original thinking and your personal positions (supported by appropriate references) are both encouraged and expected to be part of your work. In your research papers content, structure, logic and flow are expected to be at levels suitable for publication. Plagiarism intended or otherwise will be grounds for failure. Do your own work and cite the work of others. Write carefully. Grammatical and or spelling errors are simply unacceptable at this level. Any spelling errors or serious grammatical errors will result in an immediate 10% reduction in grade. Chronic misspelling or chronic poor grammar will result in a failing grade.

COMMUNICATION: I am available and delighted to support you throughout your studies in the course and I want you to feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, etc. as you feel necessary. I request that primary contact and communication be accomplished via email for ease and consistency, but telephone conversations are absolutely fine. I prefer to pre-schedule phone calls if possible. You can email a request for a telephone call and we’ll find a mutally acceptable time. I want you to enjoy the process exploring and learning more about hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and also gain confidence in your ability to research and write at a level worthy of publication. Publishing is great way to promote hypnotherapy as a mainstream discipline, build your reputation in the field, and attract new clients to a clinical practice.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There will be three written assignments; a Study Guide assignment covering the three required textbooks, and two papers. Each assignment will comprise a third of your grade. With my approval you may choose to combine the two research papers into one more comprehensive paper which will then comprise two thirds of your grade.  The assignments and various options are outlined in the classroom for the course.

In clinical practice, nothing replaces the knowledge gained through practical experience; therefore students engaged in clinical practice can and are encouraged to include personal case studies and analyses as appropriate to support their research and theses. When presenting case studies and analyses, care should be taken to always protect client confidentiality.

Your paper(s) must be written and presented in American Psychological Association (APA) approved format, so it is highly recommended that you consult the APA publication guide or a suitable reference guide as to how to write a paper with APA structure and style.
