GRIEF COUNSELING

Our online distance education program offers students the opportunity to study a comprehensive curriculum in the Doctorate in Grief Counseling degree program. The demand for highly qualified Grief Specialists is ever increasing. More health care organizations today, as well as hospices and funeral sevice providers are sponsoring grief and bereavement counseling and education programs. This degree program prepares grief specialists to practice at a high level of knowledge and skills in many facets of grief and bereavement. Doctoral specialists are also in demand as educators, program consultants and researchers.

Through this program students will learn the skills needed to succeed in this field. All of the courses are focused on the major. This allows students to maximize their learning in the core courses and succeed in their educational and career goals.

Students begin with the study of grief, death and dying, grief after a sudden loss, and clinical dimensions of mourning. Specific courses focus on treatment of mourning, children and loss, and the loss of a child. In the higher division courses students enter ethics and advanced counseling techniques, and as complete a dissertation at the end of their program. These specialty courses allow students maximum opportunities to experience the real world. Several career fields this degree will prepare you for are:

The prerequisites for this program are: an earned master degree in grief counseling, bereavement, thanatology, pastoral thanatology, counseling psychology, or a related field.

The online curriculum offers an innovative approach to higher education. Enrollment is open and students may begin the program at any time. All courses are provided in online classrooms, with on-to-one faculty mentoring. Students also have free access to our comprehensive Study Tactics and Resources Center, with links to subject related websites, online libraries, articles and research assistance. Our online Grief Counseling degree curriculum includes:

1. GRF 900 Grief, Death and Dying 6 hrs
2. GRF 920 Grief after Sudden Loss 6 hrs
3. GRF 940 Clinical Dimensions of Anticipatory Mourning 6 hrs
4. GRF 980 Treatment of Complicated Mourning 6 hrs
5. GRF 1000 Children and Grief 6 hrs
6. GRF 1200 Parental Loss of a Child 6 hrs
7. GRF 1300 Ethics in Counseling 6 hrs
8. GRF 1400 Advanced Counseling Theories and Techniques 6 hrs
9. GRF 1500 Dissertation 12 hrs

TOTAL: 60 Semester Hours

Courses in this curriculum are to be taken in sequence as above.

TUITION: $550.00 per course ($650.00 per dissertation course). Students may register and pay for one course at a time.

** There is also a one time $50.00 admission processing fee.

The Doctorate Degree in Grief Counseling has been approved by the American Academy of Grief Counseling. Students who complete GRF 900, GRF920, GRF 1200 in the curriculum are eligible to apply for Certification as a Grief Counselor, through the Academy.

Course Completion Times: Students are permitted 10 weeks to complete an online course. This may be extended with the permission of the instructor. For all Symposium Courses, students are permitted up to a six month period for completion. Doctoral students are permitted one year for all Dissertation/Doctoral Project courses.

TRANSFER CREDITS & EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CREDITS: Up to fifty percent of the degree may be earned by transfer credits from other schools and/or application for the award of experiential learning credits.
