SYLLABUS

A NOTE FROM YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Welcome to the Electronic Commerce Foundations course. My name is William Flood, your instructor. I am happy to be your instructor in this course, which is beginning step in your study of e-commerce.

This is an exciting hands-on course that will provide you with a solid grounding in the concepts of how business is conducted in an online environment. The course is designed to give you a series of managerial exercises from which you will learn about the subject of e-commerce. Your textbook will provide the theory. Additional readings in contemporary professional literature will supply information on the latest developments and technologies. Your assignments, and the intensity with which you pursue them, will provide you with the opportunity to actually “do” what e-commerce professionals do on a regular basis.

TIME FRAME: This is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you receive your textbooks.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is for those individuals who wish to learn the principles and processes of electronic commerce. The course provides an overview of web advertising strategies, technology and infrastructure, security, supply chain management, and back-office concerns. Student will explore issues such as effective web development, online customer relations management, security planning, and channel management. Students will be trained how to source and cost e-commerce technologies and services.

Topics will include:

1). Website development and promotion.
2). Online marketing and advertising.
3). Outsourcing or in-house development decisions.
4). Back office operations and information technology.
5). Sourcing and cost analysis of key services and technologies.


Methods: The course will include:

1). Assigned readings.
2). Email correspondence with me.
3). Preparation of three (3) journal reviews.
4). Preparation of three (3) sourcing/costing mini-reports.
5). Development of an e-commerce strategic plan.

Evaluation:

1). Journal article reviews - 30%.
2). Sourcing reports         - 30%.
3). Strategic Plan             - 40%.

I  = Incomplete work

ASSIGNMENTS: There are a number of projects required for completion of this course.

You will have three journal article reviews to prepare. Additionally, you will have three (3) sourcing reports to submit that will provide you with the opportunity to actually identify key suppliers of e-commerce hardware, software, or services. At the end of the course you will submit your final project – a strategic plan for migrating a company to the Internet. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS: Because this is a college-level course, make sure to document and reference where you obtain your information. Any academic format is acceptable – APA, MLA, etc. Beyond documentation, you can submit your assignments in any attractive and readable format. Written assignments can be submitted either by email (you can send it as an MS-Word97, ASCII text, or RTF attachment), or by FAX.

COMMUNICATIONS: You are encouraged to communicate with me to ask questions and discuss the subject matter and your projects. I am available as a teacher and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Often, students take courses like this to assist with professional projects that they are working on outside of class. I welcome the opportunity to help you do that. Additionally, since Internet marketing is a dynamic, ever changing environment, you may have information you would like to share from your own experiences – I encourage you to do that since it reinforces the value of your own knowledge! Primarily, communication is through email, but if you need to reach me by telephone, we can arrange that as well.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Since I ask you to send me a biography to introduce yourself, I will do the same. I am a small business consultant and career entrepreneur. I began my entrepreneurial work running a computer training school. My next venture was a direct marketing business followed by a real estate investment practice. In the 1990’s I began consulting and training other small business owners. Today, I work with aspiring entrepreneurs in such diverse areas as mail order, e-commerce, import/export, and real estate investing. I also volunteer as a counselor for the Maryland Small Business Development Center. Academically, I hold graduate degrees in counseling from the University of Delaware and business from Regent University. Currently I live in Virginia with my wife of 14 years, a new daughter and my three cats.
