SYLLABUS

TIMEFRAME: This is a five hour course and is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for this course successfully by the end of the 10 week time period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course. Alternatively, the first day may begin the day you notify me that you have received your textbook(s). Please be aware of the time frame because it is rare that extensions are given. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

Book 1: Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally . John A. Van de Walle. ISBN # 205483925.

EXAMINATIONS: A mid-term exam is scheduled for the 5th week and a final exam will be given during the 10th week. Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The exams are "open book" and the student has one (1) day to complete the exam once it is accessed from the classroom. To access the exams, you must send me an e-mail and request to have access to the exam. I will then program your access in and you will receive an e-mail from me telling you that you are authorized to take the exam. To access, you will come into the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and Password to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you will have 24 hours to submit your answers. The program provides the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. It also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submit you answers. Thus, the program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. In a short time, you will receive the exam in your e-mail with your computed score. We will both know which answers were incorrect and the correct answer.

The mid-term exam will cover:

1). Teaching Elementary Social Studies, Chapters 1-7
2). Elementary and Middle School Mathematics, Chapters 1-12
3). Teaching Children Science, Chapters 1-5

The final exam will cover:

1). Teaching Elementary Social Studies, Chapters 8-13
2). Elementary and Middle School Mathematics, Chapters 13-24
3). Teaching Children Science, Chapters 6-9

GRADING:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATION: The primary means of communication is through e-mail. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting the goals of this course. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am willing to meet with you one-on-one in this chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on the number of students that are enrolled in this course at a given time, we may have some scheduled group chats. You will receive information at the time such chats are scheduled. Please keep my e-mail address handy so that you can contact me when needed. If you change your e-mail address during the time you are enrolled in this course, please notify me immediately.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I have been teaching elementary education for 10 years. I have experience in 5th and 3rd grades, as well as many exceptionalities in special education. I currently teach 5th grade in a public school.

I hold a B.S. in Elementary Education and an M.Ed. in Learning Disabilities, both from Auburn University. I have recently completed my Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Columbus State University.

My husband, son, and daughter enjoy camping, working in the yard, and sports.

COURSE ACCELERATION: It is permissible for students to accelerate in this course. A student may choose to take the midterm exam prior to the 5th week, and/or take the final exam prior to the 10th week of the course. Please notify me if you would like to take either exam early and you will be given access. There is no need to accelerate, but it is an option.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Identify and describe three components that frame a social studies curriculum.
2). Identify guidelines to help in planning effective social studies lessons.
3). Describe several different cooperative learning structures.
4). Create various assessment tools to be used in a social studies unit.
5). Describe inquiry based learning.
6). Compare and contrast behavioral theory, cognitive theory, and constructivism.
7). Describe various types of assessment used in science classrooms.
8). Identify changes in teaching math.
9). Describe different types of mathematical knowledge.
10). Create a problem-based lesson.
11). Describe the three step approach to fact mastery.
12). Connect literature to mathematics.
