SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course deals with the theoretical and practical approaches to effective financial management. Planning, analyzing and controlling investment, and short and long term financing are examined for decision-making purposes. Emphasis is placed on the application of Risk, the methods in today's business environment and related industries. Topics include: Capital budgeting, risk and diversification, asset liability management, financial derivatives and financial engineering, swaps, options and financial future.

TIME FRAME: This course is a foundational course in the degree curriculum. This course is designed to be self-paced. Five (5) semester hours of college credits are awarded upon successful completion.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required book for this course.

GRADING: You will receive a letter grade, based on your over all score achievement. The grading scale is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 69% = Fail

Mid-term =      25%
Final Exam =   30%
Assignments = 25%
Project #1 =    20%

CLASS POLICY: Because this is a self pace type participate course, it is essential that you read the lecture material located in the classroom, prepare and return all assigned material via email or fax.

Homework: will consist of assignments for each chapter. Prior to proceeding to the next scheduled session, will return all assignments to me.

Assignments: may be faxed or e-mailed to me.

Final Exam: will cover most recent material since mid-term and will consist of Chapters 10-18. Final Exam will consist of multiple-choice, brief essay, and short exercises taken from assignments.

Mid Term - CLASS PROJECT: You will be required to do a comprehensive financial review of an annual report of a public company. Companies must be approved by me before beginning project, but, may be started at any time during the course. The student should follow guidelines for completing the class project.

COMMUNICATION: You are required, prior to the start of the course, to submit an email address to me to be used during the course. I will check email periodically and respond to you within 24 hours either by email or telephone. A telephone number will be provided to contact me, should an emergency arise or for course work discussion.

CHAT: For individual course work discussion throughout the course, you may utilize the online chat.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completing the course, you will be able to:

1). Demonstrate how interest rate risk management applies to the asset liability management tools.
2). Explain why budgets are an essential component to the planning function of management.
3). Utilize discounted cash flow techniques as a method of analysis for evaluating long-term investment.
4). Identify and explain the effects of tax as a relevant factor in determining net cash flow.
5). Demonstrate the ability to identify the potential cash flow of an investment for decision-making purposes.
6). Discuss financial futures, future contracts, interest rates, and foreign current markets.
7). Identify the basic concepts for security valuation with emphasis directed toward equity valuation models and the capital asset pricing model.
8). Apply the various techniques of asset/liability in depository institutions, and discuss the impact of changes in interest rates.
9). Explain the concepts, roles, applications, and problems of the financial market instruments and yields.
10). Identify the situation and explain why certain items cost are treated differently for cash flow and net income determination.
11). Assess the financial management of a company. The results of the assessment will be reported in a class project (commonly referred to as a term paper). Information sources for the project (paper) may include interviews with company management published financial information broker or analyst materials, trade journals of other published accounts of the company.
