Syllabus

COURSE OVERVIEW: This is a required course in the Funeral Services Education Certificate Program. This course presents the history, theory and practice of embalming and restorative art in funeral services, and a comprehensive overview of funeral planning. You will study both disciplines of funeral services and understand the applications of body preparation and funeral planning and the role of the funeral services assistant. This course presents the study and theory of embalming only. There are no embalming laboratories or practicums in this course. The course does not prepare students to embalm. Rather, the course provides the theory and application of embalming so that you have a working knowledge of the process and are prepared to assist licensed embalmers as a job may require. The course also focuses on the entire planning process for funeral services.

TIME FRAME: You have 10 weeks of time to complete the requirements for this course. This time may be extended by me, as needed. This course provides for six (6) semester hours of college credit toward the requirements for the certificate in Funeral Services Education.

PREREQUISITES: You must have successfully completed the following courses prior to registering for this course; FS 130, GRF 300.

EXAMS/GRADING: A final course letter grade will be applied upon completion of this course. Your grade will be determined by successful completion of a comprehensive learning portfolio and a final, objective-type examination.

COMMUNICATION: Throughout the course you will maintain communications with me. You will have full access to ongoing communication and mentorship with me via email, phone or scheduled online chat room communication.

CERTIFICATION: Upon successful completion of the Funeral Services Education Certificate program, you will be eligible to meet the criteria/standards for Certification as a Funeral Services Assistant, through the American Institute of Health Care Professionals. you are provided full information regarding this certification, at the time of course enrollment.

INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION: Dominick L. Flarey, Ph.D, DCH, RN,BC, GC-C is a professor and the President of Breyer State University. He is a board certified Adult Nurse Practitioner, a Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse and a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Spiritual Counselor. He has a long history of lecturing and teaching courses related to grief counseling, death and dying, and bereavement education. He has mentored students in developing various types of after care grief counseling programs and has provided consulting to funeral homes for the development of grief and bereavement programs. He is the Executive Director of the American Academy of Grief Counseling in which he provides direction for the development of standards for the practice of Grief Counseling and provides reviews and approvals of grief counseling education programs. He is an author of seven text books in health care, and has authored over 60 articles in peer reviewed journals.

CLASSROOM: You will utilize the online classroom for this course. All course content and study materials, as well as examinations are provided via the online classroom.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Identify the role/responsibilities of various funeral services professionals and paraprofessionals in the pre-planning and planning phases of body preparation and funeral services and burial.
2). Understand the history, practices and purposes of embalming and body preparation.
3). Understand and discuss the procedures used for embalming today.
4) Understand and discuss infection control, precautions and government regulations for embalming and total preparation of a body for viewing and burial.
5). Identify the role of an assistant in the embalming process.
6). Understand the art of restoration of the deceased for viewing.
7). Identify the major components of body preparation for viewing and burial.
8) Understand and identify the role of the funeral assistant in restorative art.
9). Understand and discuss various embalming preparations for the body undergoing trauma or certain disease states.
10). Discuss the purposes and processes of funeral pre-planning.
11). Identify and discuss the role of funeral director and funeral assistant in planning phases of the funeral service.
12). Discuss how to work well with bereaved families during the planning period.
13). Discuss the role of the clergy in funeral services planning.
14). Discuss common legal issues related to required documents for funeral services.
15) Discuss issues related to the sale of merchandise for funeral services.
16). Discuss the role of the funeral director and collaboration with professionals for actual burial.
17) Identify and discuss common rituals and practices of funeral services related to religious affiliations and culture.
18). Describe the entire planning process of a funeral service and the role of the funeral assistant in the process.
