SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to the Leadership Symposium in Health Care Administration, a course that is designed to prepare you for organizational leadership in current or future roles in health care organizations and settings. Leadership theory draws as much from artistry of relationships as it does from writings and reflections of leadership as an applied science. As such, much can be learned from the experiences of others, as well from as studies of attributes of successful leaders and organizations. This course will examine contemporary leadership theory as well as observations and analysis of situations where leadership is being applied and demonstrated.

In fulfillment of the assignments that will provide study of leadership theory, this course is designed to incorporate your own experience and observations regarding leadership within organizations.

TIME FRAME: This is a twenty-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day that you notify me that your textbook has arrived and you are ready to begin your studies.

It is up to you to comply with the time frames for assignments and completion of this course. Extensions are granted only for extenuating circumstances, and must be agreed upon by both you and I. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded twenty-semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course. It is recommended that you use the textbook listed below, however, if you prefer another textbook please e-mail me with your preference, including edition, author and title. Unless you have approved confirmation from me regarding an alternate textbook, it will be expected that you will use the textbook listed below

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam. The mid-term exam covers some essay questions from the readings. You may choose to draw exclusively from the textbook as the basis for your essay questions, or you may draw from journal articles on leadership in combination with the textbook readings. The final exam covers issues in contemporary leadership in the field of health care, drawn from experiences and events in the news. The details for these papers are listed in the Written Assignments section of this syllabus.

The mid-term examination is a subjective paper that must be a minimum of ten (10) pages in length, double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. I must download your paper by the end of the fifth week in the course. Please send your paper to my e-mail address.

The final examination is a series of subjective papers that must be a minimum of fifteen (15) pages in length, doubled-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. I must download your paper by the end of the tenth week in the course. Please send your paper to my e-mail address.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

The grading criteria for the written assignment is as follows:

CONTENT & LEVEL: Weight 60%.
1). Content is pertinent, and reflects points requested from the readings as well as original thought.
2). Your position or view is stated clearly, with appropriate justifications and logic.
3). Comprehensiveness of discussion is adequate.
4). The paper adequately addresses the assignment in scope and content.

ORGANIZATION: Weight 20%.
1). The paper demonstrates logical flow from idea to idea, point to point.
2). The paper includes relevant supporting ideas from the assigned readings or research as appropriate.

FORMAT/GRAMMAR: Weight 10%.
1). Spelling and sentence structure are without error.
2). Punctuation and word choice are without error.
3). Paper contains a title, subheadings and paragraphs as appropriate.

READABILITY/STYLE: Weight 10%.
1). The paper reflects a synthesis of ideas from the readings and from experience as requested.
2). The tone is appropriate to the content and assignment.
3). Style of the paper is appropriate academic level.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Dale Mueller, EdD, RN, has held numerous leadership and management roles in large and small organizations throughout her career as an administrator and consultant. Roles include leadership for change in chaotic environments, and management of teams, work groups, task forces and organizations. She is a gubernatorial appointee in strategic planning and human resources in California, and is a former President of the Chamber of Commerce in her community. She is a recognized business and community leader in the field of health care and public policy.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Identify the theoretical foundations for successful leadership in today's organizations.
2). Identify principles by which successful leaders operate.
3). Discuss the essentials of leadership behaviors and thought processes.
4). Describe observations of applied leadership in selected situations.
5). Evaluate the principles of applied leadership in selected situations.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are two (2) written assignments for this course. Each assignment consists of a ten-page (minimum) paper on the discussion questions and activities listed in the assignment section of the classroom. This paper must be double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. The first paper must be received by the end of the fifth week of the course. The second set of papers must be received by the end of the tenth week of the course.
