The Purpose
of this course is to study Human Resources from a strategic point
of view. Theories and concepts related to the formulation and implementation
of Human Resource strategies will be examined. The overall strategy
and supportive policies of the firm, operating under competitive
conditions, from the Human Resources point of view will be analyzed.
Ultimately, the learner will be able to make improved Human Resources
decisions based on the firm’s operational plan.
This is the capstone course to the Masters in HRM. This is the
final course that you will take prior to graduation. This course
is designed to pull together all the information that you have learned
thus far and organize it in a user-friendly format.
This is a ten semester
hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must
complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by
the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin
the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify
me that your textbook has arrived and you are ready to begin your
studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that
extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded ten
semester hours of credit.
There is one (1) required
textbook for this course.
Book 1: Human Resource Management- Fourth Edition. By Anthony,
Kachmar, and Perrewe’. Harcourt: 2002. ISBN# 0-03-033509-4.
There are two
examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam.
The mid-term exam will cover various discussion questions from the
text (Human Resource Management). The final exam will consist of
a term paper/case study.
The mid-term examination is programmed in the classroom for this
course. The exam is open book and you will have one (1) day to complete
the exam once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam,
you must send me an E-mail and request to have access to the exam.
Upon registration, you will receive my E-mail address. You will
receive an E-mail back from me telling you that you are now authorized
to go ahead and access your exam. To access, you will come into
the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam that you
are taking. You will need your user ID and PASSWORD to access the
exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam,
you will have 24 hours to submit your answers to me via E-mail attachment
(using Microsoft Word ). The program provides me of the exact date
and time you accessed the exam. The mid-term exam must be completed
by the 5th week of the course.
The final examination is a term paper/case study that must be a
minimum of twenty (20) pages in length, doubled-spaced with 1.5-inch
margins. Your topic will involve the seven primary functions of
Human Resources listed below:
1). Human Resource Planning.
2). Staffing.
3). Compensation and Benefits.
4). Health and Safety.
5). Employee Relations.
6). Training and Development.
7). Performance Management.
You will act as a Human Resources Consultant and will review the
current state of a specific company and will make recommendations
concerning their Human Resource needs. Additional information will
be provided concerning the company as well as any other expectations
within the first week of the course. The final exam must be completed
by the tenth week of the course.
The following grading
scale is used in this course.
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
