Syllabus

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Employment Law, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the degree, Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management. The primary focus of this course is to use a life cycle approach in text surveys from an extensive body of law which regulates the employment relationship between employer and employee. The two main objectives in this course are the explanation of major issues and rules of employment law and what employment law means for a HR department. Employment law sets the legal requirements that govern the workplace. It covers virtually every area of a HR department. Numerous learning styles are developed and gained during this course. You will begin by studying clippings at the beginning of each chapter. From these clippings, you will then write a brief synopsis of recent cases or events. Case excerpts and practical implications of the law are included with guidelines and explanations. Also addressed are the answers to the legal reasoning behind the practical aspect of running a HR department.

I know you will enjoy this course. Please learn as much as you can as you progress through it, as it does lay down a solid foundation for the rest of the curriculum. It is my pleasure to have you in the course

EXAMINATIONS: There is one examination for this book in this course. The assignments are to be done in a Learning Portfolio and cover the material in the book, "Employment Law for Human Resource Practice", by David J. Walsh. Thompson, South-Western West.

The exam is programmed and is located in the classroom for this course. The examination is "open book" objective type. You will have two (2) days to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam, you must send me an email and request to have access to the exam. Upon registration, you will receive my email address. I will then program your access in. You will receive an email back from me telling you that you are now authorized to go ahead and to access your exam. To access, you will come into the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and PASSWORD to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you have forty-eight hours to submit your answers. The program provides me the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. The program also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submitted your answers. Thus, the program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. Shortly, you will receive the exam in your email box with your computed score. You will also know what questions, if any, that you missed, and what the correct answer is. I also receive a copy of your exam and your score.

GRADING: You will receive a letter grade on the mid term exams, and a Pass/Fail on the Learning Portfolio. The Learning Portfolio may take at the least a week to do, so please make sure you allow yourself this kind of time after reading the two books and taking the exams.
