SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Health and Safety in the workplace, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelors of Science in Human Resource Management. This course will provide employees with health and safety understanding which will enable them to contribute to any health and safety management system.

Health and Safety is a wonderfully eclectic topic that I have taught on many occasions. I hope you will find it as thoroughly stimulating as I still do. This is an exciting course, a course that explores the essentials of health and safety for employee's workplace. Good health and safety standards reply on employers and employees working together to reduce risks and prevent accidents and ill health arising from work activities.

I know you will enjoy this course. Please learn as much as you can as you progress through it, as it does lay down a solid foundation for health and safety issues in the workplace. It is my pleasure to have you in the course.

TIME FRAME: This is a six-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded six semester hours of credit.

EXAMINATIONS: There will be only one examination for this course, a final exam. The final exam covers the material in our text. The final examination must be taken by the end of the 10th week in the course.

The exam is programmed and is located in the classroom for this course. The examinations are "open book" objective type. You will have two (2) day to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam, you must send me an email and request to have access to the exam. Upon registration, you will receive your email address. I will then program your access in. You will receive an email back from me telling you that you are now authorized to go ahead and to access your exam. To access, you will come into the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and PASS WORD to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you have 48 hours to submit your answers. The program provides me the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. The program also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submitted your answers. Thus, the program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. Shortly, you will receive the exam in your email box with your computed score. You will also know what questions, if any, that you missed, and what the correct answer is. I also receive a copy of your exam and your score.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Welcome! I look forward to each course I teach knowing the learning experience is exciting and distinctive. Each class brings together unique groups of students that truly enrich the learning experience. I view myself as your colleague and guide, assisting in logistics as well as contributing scholarly perspective, and I believe that it's important to be compatible both in subject matter interest and in communication style. I view faculty/learner relationships as collegial, where we both learn, but while you are adding to the current body of knowledge, I am opening doors to get you where you want to be. I think the relationship is successful if you are pursuing your goal, progressing at a comfortable rate, not experiencing anxiety with the process, and enjoying the journey. How does one measure that? You're having fun and, before you know it, you're done!

I am an enthusiastic advocate for online learning because it allows you to develop information literacy that is essential whether you study or practice business. Being able to communicate, lead teams and research online are competencies leaders in every field need. Where else can nonprofit managers, small business owners and corporate executives discuss emerging ideas in business management and apply them to their careers and organizations? What other educational opportunity so effectively brings students together from urban, rural, U.S. and international settings? This is the kind of diverse and vibrant dialogue that makes learning come to life at Breyer State University (BSU).

I am a practitioner who practices what I teach. I bring to BSU the benefit of my experience as a manager and a human resource consultant. My consultations involve the development in the areas of leadership for nonprofit and business organizations. My quality includes being responsive to learner needs, adhering to academic excellence and BSU standards, meeting the needs of society and the world of work for a skilled and learning oriented workforce, and striving for creative and continuously improving content. Furthermore, I believe in treating adult students with respect, providing instruction that is responsive to differing learning styles, and creating flexibility to allow for individual differences and needs.

As someone who is a single dad and a distance learner while working full time and raising a family, I understand the determination that is required to make education a priority in a busy life. I welcome the opportunity to work with you!

Aside from teaching, I have over 18 years of management experience having held several management titles over three key Department of Defense areas. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Human Resources.
