Syllabus

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course examines the dramatic changes in security management since the 911 attacks. It examines new priorities, strategic security planning, best practices, budgeting, recruiting and training issues for security organizations. Students answer review questions and submit a security management consulting paper based on an actual interview with a client.

TIME FRAME: This is an four-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks time frame for completion. You must complete all of the requirements for the course to be successfully completed by the end of the ten-week period.

TEXTBOOK: There is one textbook required for this course.

GRADING: I will determine your final grade based on the total number of points you have accumulated at the end of the semester. I do not award letter grades for each paper or exam. Your grade will be determined as follows:

TOTAL 100 POINTS:

95-100 points A
90-94 points A-
85-89 points B+
80-84 points B
75-79 points B-
70-74 points C+
65-70 points C
60-64 points C-
55-59 points D
below 55 points F

GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH PAPER: The research paper will be 10 pages, double spaced and 12 font. You may utilize any recognized writing style including MLA, APA, Chicago Style and Turabian. The paper must include footnotes and a bibliography. You should provide at least 10 different sources in your bibliography.

Points will be deducted for the following:

Sloppy work: 5 Points
Poor Grammar: 5 Points
Repeated spelling errors: 5 Points
No Footnotes: 5 Points
Plagiarism: Automatic failure for the entire course!
Late Paper: 2 points for each day late.

QUESTION GUIDELINES FOR INTERVIEW: * The person interviewed must be responsible for the security of the organization. The name, title and phone number/email of the person interviewed must be provided in the report for verification purposes.

What type of academic credentials do you have?
Are you a CPP?
What was security like before 911?
What is security like after 911?
What is your biggest security concern?
Do you have the security equipment and personnel necessary to
protect your client?
Do you have a crisis management plan?
Have you trained your employees on emergency evacuation procedures?
Does your organization have a security committee?

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Develop an understanding of the operational and strategic changes in corporate security since the September 11, 2001 attacks.
2). Develop an appreciation for the business model of security.
3). Learn how to assess risk and determine the type of security program that is appropriate.
4). Learn how to select a security team that is best suited for the asset protection charter.
5). Develop an understanding of the methods needed to implement a strategic plan designed to address real and potential threats.
