Syllabus

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to final class for your Master Degree in Homeland Security-the Homeland Security Graduate Project. This will be an intensive research or practical application project. I will provide you with two options.

Option 1: A thirty-page research paper on one of the following topics:

1). How the Lack of Border Security in the United States Will Result in Another September 11 Attack.
2). Why FEMA Should Not Be Part of Homeland Security.
3). The Role of The National Guard in Homeland Security.
4). The Threat of Terrorist Cells Already in the U.S.

A 30 slide Power Point Presentation will be required to support your paper.

Option 2:

A detailed interview and assessment of the first responders in your community and their role in Homeland Security. This will be a 20-page paper.

It will consist of an interview with the director of police, fire or emergency operations.

The following questions will be asked:

  1. Name, title
  2. Number of people in organization
  3. Mission
  4. Application to homeland security
  5. Receive any homeland security funding.
  6. Training for WMD?
  7. Equipment for WMD?
  8. Participation in crisis management exercises?
  9. Description of improvements in organization needed to better provide homeland security.
  10. Comparison to other organizations who demonstrate best practices in homeland security.

A 30 slide Power Point Presentation will be required to support your paper.

Both the research and applications papers should be typed, double spaced in 12 font. It should include footnotes and bibliography. It should follow APA, Chicago or MLA writing style. Option 1 papers must provide at least 20 different references.

TIME FRAME: This is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day in which you notify me that you have selected an option and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

The following points will be deducted from the paper:

  1. Failed to follow guidelines: -10
  2. Poor punctuation: -5
  3. Spelling errors: -5 points
  4. Poor grammar: - 5 points
  5. Poor research: - 5 points

Total points possible for paper: 100

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions are scheduled. Please keep my email address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: My name is Ed Piper. I hold a Master Degree in Applied Behavioral Science from Johns Hopkins University. I have over thirty years of experience in intelligence, security, law enforcement, training and academia. I am President of Homeland Security Consultants, Inc. I have served on the faculties of Webster University Graduate School and George Washington University. I currently serve on the faculties of Johns Hopkins University, Norwich University, Breyer State University and Canyon College.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Apply the concepts and knowledge gained from BSU studies of Homeland Security.
2). Demonstrate ability to research, write and apply problem-solving abilities towards complex Homeland Security issues.
