COURSE OBJECTIVE: Welcome to Needs of the Aged, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelor of Science in Human Services.

This is an excellent course that will acquaint you with the problems of the older generation. As we enter the 21st century, more Americans than ever before will be in their seventh, eight, and ninth decades of life. By the year 2030, there will be twice the number of people over 65 as there was in l999. With this in mind we anticipate that community programs and services will play an important role in the lives of all older adults.

This course will familiarize you with policies, services that are available, and all the diverse challenges of the older adult.

I know you will enjoy this course. It is my pleasure to have you in this class.

TIME FRAME: This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded eight semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam.

The mid-term examination must be taken by the end of the 5th week in the course. The final examination must be taken by the end of the 10th week in the course.

Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The examinations are "open book" objective type. You will have one (1) day to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam, you must send me an email and request to have access to the exam. Upon registration, you receive you e-mail address. I will then program you access in. You will receive an e-mail back from me telling you that you are now authorized to go ahead and to access your exam. To access, you will come in the classroom click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need you User ID and PASSWORD to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you have 24 hours to submit your answers. The program provides me the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. The program also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submitted your answers. Thus. The program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. Shortly you will receive the exam in your e-mail box with your computed score. You will also know what questions, if any, that you missed, and what the correct answer is I also receive a copy of your exam and your score.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through e-mail. However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like. Please keep my e-mail address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. If at any time during this course you change your e-mail address, please be sure to notify me right away.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are no written assignments for this course. There is a considerable amount of reading involved in this course, and I would prefer you spend you time with the books learning the material.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I, Sally George, BSW, AA, received an Associate Degree in Business Management from Cerritos College in Norwalk, California and a Certificate in Chemical Dependence Counseling from Rio Salado College in Mesa, Arizona. I attended YSU in Youngstown, Ohio and received a BSW from Breyer State University.

I am currently teaching undergraduates at Breyer State University. My career experience includes being a legal secretary, owner and operator of a boutique, and real estate agent.

My volunteer hours were spent counseling chemically dependent teens at Mesa Community Hospital and counseling teens at the Church of the Assension in Fountain Hills, Arizona.

I am a wife, mother, and proud grandmother of eight grandchildren. Most of all I enjoy being with my family, but in the quiet hours, I enjoy writing articles for Catholic magazines. Reading and decorating are also two of my favorite hobbies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

2). Know about major aging policies, including social security and Medicare.
3). Learn about patterns of service use and theories of help seeking behavior.
4). Understand information and referral.
5). Become acquainted with intergenerational programs.
6). Learn about the educational programs for the older population.
7). Know about senior centers and recreation.
8). Learn about employment programs for older workers.
9). Understand income programs that are available.
10). Know about nutrition and meal programs.
11). Learn about health care for older adults.
12). Learn about mental health services for older adults.
13). Know about legal services available for the elderly.
14). Understand transportation and housing problems.
15). Know about homecare services, respite services and long-term care services.
16). Know about programs and services fore the future.
