SYLLABUS:

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Microsoft Word, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelor of Executive Assistant Management. I am pleased to be the instructor for this course.

This is a hands-on course designed to give you practical experience in the use of Microsoft Word. It will provide you with the fundamental skills needed to use Microsoft Word 2000 in a business environment. You will learn how to format and edit text and paragraphs, then move into the use of document-wide functions such margins, page numbers, columns, and styles. In addition, you will be introduced to Word 2000's Web page content, tables, and graphic features.

TIME FRAME: This is an eight-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded eight semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course:

Book 1: Microsoft Word, Benchmark Series. Nita Rutkosky. EMC Paradigm: ISBN # 07638-0344-8 (Text and CD-Rom), Order Number 05362.

SOFTWARE: Microsoft Word or access to Microsoft Word is required for this course.

EXAMINATIONS: There are no exams for this course. Instead you will be graded on weekly projects.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

Your weekly projects are worth ten points each for a total of 100 points for the course.

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions are scheduled. Please keep my email address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I, John Moran , graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Criminal Justice. During my studies there I took many psychology and computer science courses. I also am a graduate of the Youngstown State Police Academy, where I graduated with the third highest grade of a class of 50 cadets. I plan to, in the future, earn my Masters in Policing Science. In my spare time I enjoy weight lifting, jogging, music, and pistol shooting.

I am currently an academic advisor and assistant director of programming and website development at Breyer State University.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Use the basic interface of MS Word.
2). Set up tables and charts for projects.
3). Design tables of contents for your projects.
4). Customize your projects using the tools and various formats in MS Word.
5). Insert times, dates, indexes, footnotes, headers, and the like in your projects.
6). Design schedules for at home or at the office.
7). Design posters and flyers.
8). Professionally lay-out your resume.
9). Use Word to write APA style papers.
