The Controversy of Global Trade

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course will sweep aside the misconceptions that litter the debate over trade and gives you a clear understanding of the issues involved.

This book puts the findings of an extensive body of economic research at the disposal of the general public. Using it as a tool, we will examine the positions of the proponents and critics of free trade and make plain the stakes involved in their disagreement, particularly for the United States. We will understand the economic benefits of trade, not just for corporations, but for people and the environment. We will discuss how protectionist policies damage the economy and fail to save jobs. Examining U.S. trade policy, we will prove how "fair trade" measures are arbitrary, unfair, and often harmful. We will then demystify the World Trade Organization and set the record straight about its controversial rulings on trade and the environment. Free trade should not be held up as a panacea but we will demonstrate why it is our best alternative.

In a debate where assertions often masquerade as arguments, your analysis will be firmly evidence-based, rooted in empirical research and relying on specific examples provided by the book and its illustrations. You will be offered access to a vast body of economic learning to then finely argue one of the most burning controversies of our time.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Have revisited the 90s from the North American Free Trade
2). Agreement to the World Trade Organization and the street battles in the “Battle of Seattle”.
3). Understand why global trade has become so controversial.
4). Discover if free trade deserves its bad reputation.

COURSE PROGRESSION: The course begins on the date of your enrolment. You have 90 days to complete this course. Extensions are rarely granted, and then, only for extreme emergencies or active military duty. If you do not complete the course within the 90 day time frame receive an “incomplete/withdrawal” and would have to re-register and pay tuition again if you desire to complete it.

This is a self-paced course. You may proceed at the pace that is right for you. It is acceptable to accelerate in this course and complete it in less than 90 days.

As you progress through the course, always feel free to contact your instructor to discuss issues, questions, etc… related to the course. Your instructor is there to be a mentor to you as you proceed with learning.

EXAMS: There is only one examination for this certificate program. The examination may be taken upon successful completion of all of the assignments for Courses I, II, and III in this certificate program. Assignments are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. The final examination is open book, and you have three days to complete it. I will give you full instructions on accessing and taking the exam as you progress in the certificate program. The final examination covers the materials from all three courses in the certificate program. The final examination consists of objective type questions with few non-graded subjective ones which will reflect your interest of the topic. The grade scale for the final examination is provided above.
