COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will:

). Have understood what is the WTO, have familiarized with its mandate, and have witnessed its evolution from its creation. The student will also develop their analytical skills thanks to this collection of research and case study articles from Sub-Saharan African authors, the WTO and the press on the hard issues in the current debate on trade, environment and sustainable development.

). Be able to respond to the need to better inform global policy and opinion makers of Southern sustainable development priorities, and contribute to clarifying the relationship between trade liberalization, economic growth, poverty alleviation, and environmental degradation.

). Anchor the trade and environment debate at the WTO by means of these articles. Recently the global free trade debate has been overtaken in the public opinion agenda by a far-reaching discussion of the inter-linkages between trade and sustainable development.

). Aware of the persistence of the North-South cleavage of global trade, and acquire a better understanding of the broad dimensions of the linkage between trade and environment today and of its implications for future generations.
