Welcome to JR110 Society and the Press , a Bachelor of Science Level course in the curriculum for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism. I am pleased to be your instructor and look forward to a lively and productive association as you enter the exciting world of Journalism studies.
It is important to have the right tools, so after you have purchased your books, (Social Meanings of News By Daniel Berkowitz and The Chicago Manual of Style, 15 th Edition by the University of Chicago Press Staff) please be sure you have a quiet, well-lighted place of your own to study. While reading, always keep an unabridged Webster's Dictionary, notebook, pen and highlighters close by. As you read, make notes of words or names that you are not familiar with and use the dictionary to remedy that lack of knowledge. As you read, make good use of the highlighter for points that stand out to you. If they are important to you, they might have also been important enough to note for future reference and studies in test preparations. Do not take your reading material lightly. There is purpose to the chosen text and as you move through your Journalism studies at Breyer State University , you will see the interaction of the individual courses overlap. Once a specific course is finished, it really is not finished! Don't turn your back on it..you might miss something!
This is a ten-week course and all requirements for the course must be completed by the end of the ten weeks. Your first day of class will be when you email me that you have received your books. Please stay very aware of the schedule and vigilantly monitor yourself as any possibility of time extended beyond the ten weeks will be a rare exception. This course is worth six hours of college credit.
There are two required textbooks for the course:
Book 1: Social Meanings of News. Daniel Berkowitz: ISBN # 0761900764.
Book 2: The Chicago Manual of Style 15th Edition. The University of Chicago Press Staff: ISBN # 0226104036.
Keep in mind that when you have completed the twelve courses, you will have collected a wealth of resource information for your personal library. Read them carefully so you will always know where to access the information you might be looking for someday.
The grading scale is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
70% & Below = Fail
I am available via email seven days a week and I check my email messages frequently. You will always hear from me within the same day. When you make me aware that your books have arrived and you are ready to begin, I will also give you a telephone number which you will be more than welcome to use if email messages do not answer your questions.
During this course, you will be studying the sociology of news production in today's world, structure and constraints on today's community, social control in the newsroom, strategic use of routine events, news as a familiar story and as a social power and application of the concepts.
