Welcome to JR260 Advertising Layout Design, a Bachelor of Science Level course in the curriculum for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism. I am pleased to be your instructor and look forward to an interactive and productive association as you continue your studies in Journalism. This is an exciting course and I believe you will enjoy it immensely. The diversity alone in the materials you will cover is an adventure. You will be writing ads for everything from small town newspapers to national billboards and travel into the internet. And those topics are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg! Every journalist should know everything they can about all aspects involved in journalism and whether or not you ever work in advertising, knowing at least the fundamentals will provide you with a broader base which will only make your career as a journalist that much more successful.
Your key resource for this course is Fundamentals of Copy and Layout by Albert C. Book and C. Dennis Schick. Re-read the chapter or chapters in previous text used in your journalism studies thus far. As you go through your weekly assignments, always keep an unabridged Webster Dictionary,(preferably Webster College Dictionary Fourth Edition), a notebook, pen and highlighters close by and use them. Wear them out! As you read, make notes of words or names that you are not familiar with and remedy that lack of knowledge. Make good use of the highlighter for points that stand out to you. If they are important to you, they might have also been important enough to note for future reference and studies in test preparations or more significantly, your future work in Journalism. Do not take your reading material lightly. I emphasize: Once a specific course is finished, it really is not finished! Don' t turn your back on it you might miss something! Or more likely, you will miss something.
This is a ten-week course and all requirements for the course must be completed by the end of the ten week period. Your first day of class will be when you email me that you have received your books. Please stay very aware of the schedule and vigilantly monitor yourself as any possibility of time extended beyond the ten weeks will be a rare exception. In Journalism there are always deadlines somewhere you will be required to adhere to. Incorporate that mind set into your studies. Set deadlines for yourself with assignments; make them a priority. If there are times when you will make the choice to mail me assignments via the U.S. Postal Service instead of via the internet, postmarks will be the deciding factor of your timeliness. This course is worth six semester hours.
There is one required textbook for JR260.
Book 1: Fundamentals of Copy and Layout by Albert C. Book and C. Dennis Schick ISBN 0844230227.
Keep in mind that when you have completed the twelve courses, you will have collected a wealth of resource information for your personal library. Read them carefully so you will always know where to access the information you might be looking for someday. All of the books chosen for the Journalism courses at Breyer State University have been selected with care and purpose. Please treat them with importance and make this learning experience one of the most important things you ever do.
There will be two examinations for JR260. A midterm is scheduled for Week Five and can only be taken after you have successfully completed all of the assignments through Week Four. The Final Examination is scheduled for Week Ten and can only be taken after you have successfully completed the midterm and all of the assignments for Weeks Six through Nine.
