COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to your Journalism 450 Practicum for the final Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for your degree in Journalism

You made a commitment and have worked hard to bring yourself to this point. All that you have learned thus far, will be applied in some form, to your Practicum.

During this journey in journalism, you have learned many things and maybe one of the most important of those being that nothing will be accomplished if you don't sit down and write. Your success will be in writing consistently. After you write, you need to rewrite.Rewriting the story is not always exciting or fun, but it is essential. It is where you clarify and focus on being concise. It's in the rewriting that our personal style begins to shine through, setting us apart from others and making our work salable.

Writing gives us the opportunity to share our ideas with others. It offers is a chance to be part of dispersing information, new ideas, exciting and challenging news, entertainment and a lot of the time, it is just the enjoyment and the pleasure of being part of the world of journalism! It taps our creative resources and allows us to express ourselves with words. Journalists paint pictures, with words. Write often! Have fun with it! Be the best you can be. Be a professional.

This is the last course before you graduate and though it is not the most important course, it is definitely a course of great significance. Read and weigh your options carefully, giving the importance of each task and what you can accomplish with them, weighted consideration and then have fun with it! Be professional!

TIME FRAME: This is a thirty (30) semester hour course and you have the same ten-week time frame for your Practicum as you have had for all of your previous Journalism courses. Keep in mind that you are welcome to accelerate your assignment if you do not lose any quality in your assignment by doing so. All of your work must be completed by the last day of the tenth week. If you are mailing materials to me via the U.S. Postal Service, please remember that I will use the postal mark as an indicator. If you find yourself mailing your material on the last day of the ten-week period, be sure to have the postal clerk handstamp the date so that I can clearly see it. If it is late, your Practicum will not be credited. The first day of week one will start the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Extensions of time are very rare. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded thirty (30) semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOKS: The required textbooks for this course include your permanent, personal reference library. Use them often and use them well. It will be apparent to me if you have used them, when I receive your presentation. By now, your books should be showing wear, have highlighter on most of the pages, notes in the margins, tabs and paperclips galore just from consistent use of them by you. How does your spiral ring notebook look?
