Online Degree Program
Our online distance education program offers students the opportunity to study a comprehensive curriculum in the Grief Counseling and Thanatology graduate degree program. Many health care providers, out-patient hospitals, and private therapists need highly qualified grief counselors to help patients with mourning from traumatically stressful situations such as death in the family or a traumatic disaster. Helping counsel these patients to overcome their emotions is a very fulfilling and rewarding career.
Through this program students will learn the skills needed to succeed in this field. All of the courses are focused on the major. This allows students to maximize their learning in the core courses and succeed in their educational and career goals.
Students begin with the study of death and dying, counseling, grief counseling and grief therapy. Specific courses focus on ethics and near death experience. In the higher division courses students enter symposium course where they are able to focus more in one area of Grief Counseling and Thanatology, complete a comprehensive project as well as a Grief Counseling and Thanatology degree research topic course. These specialty courses allow students maximum opportunities to experience the real world. Several career fields this degree will prepare you for are:

The prerequisites for this program are: an earned bachelor degree in grief counseling, counseling psychology, bereavement education, thanatology, pastoral ministry, nursing, social work, or a closely related field
The online curriculum offers an innovative approach to higher education. Enrollment is open and students may begin the program at any time. All courses are provided in online classrooms, with on-to-one faculty mentoring. Students also have free access to our comprehensive Study Tactics and Resources Center, with links to subject related websites, online libraries, articles and research assistance. Our online Grief Counseling and Thanatology degree curriculum includes:
50 Semester Hours
Certificate Option: students
have the option of first enrolling into and completing a Graduate Certificate in this degree program. All courses in the graduate
certificate program will transfer in to the Masters Degree Program.
Following graduation with the Graduate Certificate, students may
then elect to enroll in the masters degree program and complete

The Masters Degree in Grief Counseling has
been approved by the American Academy of Grief Counseling. Students
who complete the first three courses in the curriculum are eligible
to apply for Certification as a Grief Counselor, through the Academy.
Course Completion Times: Students are permitted 10 weeks to complete an online course. This may
be extended with the permission of the instructor. For all Symposium Courses, students are
permitted up to a six month period for completion. Doctoral students are permitted one year for
all Dissertation/Doctoral Project courses.
