Masters in Health Care Administration

MHA 645

Breyer State University
Instructor: Deryl Gulliford, PhD

SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to MHA 645, a very important part of your training in health care administration. A solid understanding of the principles and practices presented in this course will be essential as you advance in your healthcare administration career. I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with you in learning and applying this information!

This course covers all aspects of health care quality management, emphasizing real world applications of course concepts, the "systems approach" to health care quality, and team problem solving, always in the interest of quality patient care. The patient comes first.

During this course, you will be asked to present "real world" examples of quality measurement and quality improvement strategies from your own professional setting and/or prior professional experiences. This serves to make the learning more interesting and relevant, and demonstrates application of concepts, which I consider essential for online learning at the graduate level.

I am enthusiastic about this opportunity to work with you, and I aspire to be very accessible as you proceed with your coursework. I am online every day, and I try very hard to respond to your communications with 24 hours.

Again, welcome to MHA 645, and let me help in any way that I can!

TIME FRAME: This is a four semester hour course, and you are allotted ten weeks to complete all work. You may start at any time. I will consider Day One of the course to be the date on which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and that you are ready to begin your studies. It is unusual that I grant extensions beyond this time frame, and only with good justification. Ten weeks is ample time to complete this course. Upon completion of all assignments, you will be awarded four semester hours of graduate credit.

TEXTBOOKS: There is one required textbook for this course.

Book 1: Applying Quality Management in Healthcare: A Process for Improvement . Dr. Diane Kelly. Chicago, IL; Health Administration Press: 2003. ISBN# 1567932601.

It is an outstanding reference on this topic, the leading text in the field at hospital administration training programs throughout the country.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a midterm examination covering Sections I and II of the text, and a final examination covering Section III.

The midterm must be taken by the end of the fifth week of the course, and the final must be taken by the end of the tenth week.

Both exams are "open book" essay exams. They do not emphasize simple restatement of facts from the text. They emphasize application of course concepts. You have a 24 hour period to complete each exam. The emphasis is on quality of content and expression , not on speed of completion. In order to take the exams, you will need to send me an email requesting access.

Students who read all assignments and think critically about the concepts generally do well on my exams. I am not out to trick you, or to make things harder than they need to be. I simply want to help you learn and then document that learning for the University. The key is to hit the main points in the course content, and then demonstrate some application to your own experiences or real world setting.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATIONS: You are encouraged to communicate with me at least weekly. I am available as your teacher, coach, mentor and colleague as you move forward.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT: The nature of the exams for this course is such that I do not require additional written assignments. You will have ample opportunity to demonstrate your written communication skills on the exams.
