Welcome to Management Theory, a course that is designed to prepare
you for entrepreneurial and leadership roles in business settings
where a foundation of management theory is desired. Management
theory applies to endeavors of all sizes, durations and purposes,
including public, private, not-for-profit and philanthropic organizations,
and in accountabilities designed to reach specific, varied and
diverse goals and purposes.
This course is intended to acquaint you with fundamental
management theory in the scope of service to organizations and
to society, as well as essentials for you as an individual in
pursuit of managerial effectiveness.
In fulfillment of the assignments that will provide
fundamentals in management theory, this course is designed to
incorporate your own experience and observations in management.
This
is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks
of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course
successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day
of week one will begin the day that you register for the course,
or the day which you notify me that your textbook has arrived
and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of
the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted,
unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion
of this course, you will be awarded five-semester hours of credit.
There
is one (1) required textbook for this course.
Book 1: The Essential Drucker: In One Volume the
Best of Sixty Years of Peter Drucker's Essential Writings on Management.
By Drucker, Peter. HarperCollins Publishers: 2001. ISBN # 131095978.
There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and
a final exam. The mid-term exam covers the dimensions and purposes
of management, selections from topics #1-12 in The Essential Drucker.
The final exam covers essentials of successful management, selections
from topics #1-12 and #13-22 in The Essential Drucker. Upon registration,
you will receive details for these papers.
The mid-term examination is a subjective paper that
must be a minimum of ten (10) pages in length, double-spaced with
1.5-inch margins. I must download your paper by the end of the
5th week in the course.
The final examination is a subjective paper that
must be a minimum of ten (10) pages in length, doubled-spaced
with 1.5-inch margins. I must download your paper by the end of
the 10th week in the course.
Both exams are programmed and are located in the
classroom for this course. The examinations are subjective essays
based on readings and discussion questions. To send me an exam,
you must e-mail me and let me know that your exam (paper) has
been completed. Upon registration you will receive my e-mail address.
I will download your paper, and return it to you with feedback,
including your grade.
The grading
scale for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
The grading criteria for the written assignment
is as follows:
Weight
60%.
1). Content is pertinent, and reflects points requested from the
readings as well as original thought.
2). Student position or view is stated clearly, with appropriate
justifications and logic.
3). Comprehensiveness of discussion is adequate.
4). The paper adequately addresses the assignment in scope and
content.
Weight
20%.
1). The paper has an introduction, major points as requested,
and a concluding summary.
2). The paper demonstrates logical flow from idea to idea, point
to point.
3). The paper includes supporting ideas from the assigned readings
as appropriate.
4). The student viewpoint is clearly illustrated.
Weight
10%.
1). Spelling and sentence structure are without error.
2). Punctuation and word choice are without error.
3). Paper contains a title, subheadings and paragraphs as appropriate.
Weight
10%.
1). The paper reflects a synthesis of ideas from the readings
and from experience as requested.
2). The tone is appropriate to the content and assignment.
3). Style of the paper is appropriate academic level.
You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a
teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals
for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. Upon
registration, you will receive my email address. However, I am
also available for conversation by telephone if you would like.
Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am
also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room
at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students
are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have
some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information
at the time such chat sessions are scheduled. Please keep my email
address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. If
at any time during this course you change your email address,
please be sure to notify me right away.
There are two (2) written assignments for this course. Each assignment
consists of a ten-page (minimum) paper on the discussion questions
listed below. This paper must be double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins.
The first paper must be received by the end of the fifth week
of the course. The second paper must be received by the end of
the tenth week of the course.
Midterm Paper: This paper must
be submitted by the fifth week of the course.
Theoretical Foundations of Management Functions
From readings #1-12 in The Essential Drucker, select
at least ten principles that you consider to be essential foundations
for management functions. Clearly identify which essay or essays
each of the ten selected principles are taken from in the Drucker
readings. After you have identified your essentials, discuss and
illustrate how each of these principles are demonstrated in successful
enterprise, either from your personal experience, or from business
events in the news.
Final Paper: This paper must be
submitted by the tenth week of the course.
Theoretical Foundations of Management Effectiveness
From readings #1-12 and #13-22 in The Essential
Drucker, select at least ten actions or perspectives that successful
managers must incorporate for success according to Drucker's theories
and views. Clearly identify which essay or essays each of the
management actions or perspectives are taken from in the Drucker
readings. After you have identified management actions or perspectives,
discuss and illustrate how each of these actions or perspectives
are demonstrated in successful enterprise, either from your personal
experience, or from events about managers in the news.
Dale Mueller, EdD, RN, has held numerous leadership and management
roles in large and small organizations throughout her career as
an administrator and consultant. Roles include leadership for
change in chaotic environments, and management of teams, work
groups, task forces and organizations. She is a gubernatorial
appointee in strategic planning and human resources in California,
and is a former President of the Chamber of Commerce in her community.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
