Welcome to Management
and Teams, a course that is designed to prepare you for business
management with a foundation of understanding regarding management
and organization of successful teams in business endeavors. Whether
the team is one that will be led or managed, or the effort is within
a team working for a common goal, the information in this course
will prepare you with team principles and key success factors. In
fulfillment of the assignments that will provide fundamentals in
business management, this course is designed to incorporate your
own experience and observations regarding team participation, and
in managing and leading teams.
This is a five-semester
hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must
complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by
the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin
the day that you register for the course, or the day that you notify
me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your
studies. It is up to you to comply with the time frames for assignments
and completion of this course. Extensions are granted only for extenuating
circumstances, and must be agreed upon by both you and I. Upon successful
completion of this course, you will be awarded five-semester hours
of credit.
There is one required
textbook for this course.
Book 1: The Wisdom of Teams: Creating the High-Performance Organization.

There are two examinations
for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam. The mid-term
exam covers the definition and understanding of elements of teams,
selections from chapters #1-8 in The Wisdom of Teams. The final
exam covers essentials of team management, selections from topics
#1-12 and Appendix A in The Wisdom of Teams. The details for these
papers is listed in the Written Assignments section of this syllabus.
The mid-term examination is a subjective paper that must be a minimum
of ten (10) pages in length, double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins.
I must download your paper by the end of the fifth week in the course.
The final examination is a subjective paper that must be a minimum
of ten (10) pages in length, doubled-spaced with 1.5-inch margins.
I must download your paper by the end of the tenth week in the course.
The examinations are subjective essays based on the readings and
discussion questions. To send the exam to me, you must send me an
email and let me know that your exam (paper) has been completed.
Upon registration, you will receive my e-mail address. I will then
download your paper, and return it to you with feedback, including
your grade.
The grading scale for
this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail
The grading criteria for the written assignment is as follows:
Weight
60%.
1). Content is pertinent, and reflects points requested from the
readings as well as original thought.
2). Student position or view is stated clearly, with appropriate
justifications and logic.
3). Comprehensiveness of discussion is adequate.
4). The paper adequately addresses the assignment in scope and content.
Weight
20%.
1). The paper has an introduction, major points as requested, and
a concluding summary.
2). The paper demonstrates logical flow from idea to idea, point
to point.
3). The paper includes supporting ideas from the assigned readings
as appropriate.
4). The student viewpoint is clearly illustrated.
Weight
10%.
1). Spelling and sentence structure are without error.
2). Punctuation and word choice are without error.
3). Paper contains a title, subheadings and paragraphs as appropriate.
Weight
10%.
1). The paper reflects a synthesis of ideas from the readings and
from experience as requested.
2). The tone is appropriate to the content and assignment.
3). Style of the paper is appropriate academic level.
There are
two (2) written assignments for this course. Each assignment consists
of a ten-page (minimum) paper on the discussion questions listed
below. This paper must be double-spaced with 1.5-inch margins. The
first paper must be received by the end of the fifth week of the
course. The second paper must be received by the end of the tenth
week of the course. Details of the mid-term and final papers can
be found in the assignment section of the classroom.

and small organizations throughout her career as an administrator
and consultant. Roles include leadership for change in chaotic environments,
and management of teams, work groups, task forces and organizations.
She is a gubernatorial appointee in strategic planning and human
resources in California, and is a former President of the Chamber
of Commerce in her community.
