Welcome to Advanced Leadership Theory, a course that is designed
to prepare the student of business and organizational leadership
for future roles in business in settings where leading the organization
for continued success in times of change is desired. Leadership
theory draws as much from artistry of relationships as it does
from writings and reflections of leadership as an applied science.
As such, much can be learned from the experiences of others, as
well from as studies of attributes of successful leaders and organizations.
This course will examine contemporary leadership theory as well
as applications in current business settings.
In fulfillment of the assignments that will provide
study of leadership theory, this course is designed to incorporate
your own experience and observations regarding leadership
within organizations.
This
is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks
of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course
successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day
of week one will begin the day that you register for the course,
or the day which you notify me that your textbook has arrived
and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of
the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted,
unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion
of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

From the readings (using one of the texts, or a

consider to be essential to the art and practice of applied leadership.
For each of the ten principles or illustrations
(one page each, total minimum ten pages), provide the following
information:
1). Identify the reading from which your information
is drawn.
2). Provide a synopsis of the principle or illustration, including
a statement of why it is important for leaders to know this information.

that this attribute is necessary for you in your future career.
This
paper must be submitted by the tenth week of the course.
Applied Leadership Theory.
This final paper is a set of discussions about contemporary
events, the defined leadership principles covered in the mid-term
examination, and your analysis of how the leadership activity
in current events fits the leadership principles identified in
the readings.
Select at least five of the ten principles or illustrations
of leadership that you presented in the mid-term paper. Based
on these selections, research contemporary news articles, professional
journal articles, or business articles to provide an example of
each of the five selected leadership principles or illustrations
taken from contemporary events and leadership actions.
Prepare a minimum of two pages on each principle
that you have researched (five principles, total minimum of ten
pages), covering the following for each:
1). Briefly describe the contents of the article
about a leader or leadership situation in business today, providing
the complete citation of your source of information.
2). Provide your description of how the information in the article
demonstrates the selected leadership principle or illustration
that you have selected, as identified by you in your mid-term
work.
3). Relate your analysis of how well the leader or leadership
situation fits the principle, and whether anything could have
been done differently for effectiveness, given what you have learned
from the readings and personal experience.
