This is a six-hour
course in the curriculum for the PH.D. in Management program. It
is my pleasure to instruct you in this course. The course is an
introduction to the theories and practices of management and it
is a study of evolution of management, the identification of current
issues and problems, and the examination of future trends. Upon
successful completion of this course, you will be able
to;
1). Comprehend the principles, functions and responsibilities of
management.
2). Understand the impact of the surrounding economic, social, and
political environment.
3). Develop an awareness of multiple approaches to solve issues
and problems.
The course is allotted
ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for
the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first
day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will earn six semester
hours of credit.
You have 1(one) required
textbook:
Book 1: Management: Competing in the New Era by Bateman,
Thomas S. and Snell, Scott A. 6th Edition, McGraw-Hill Irwin
Inc., New York: 2004. ISBN # 73254622.
It is your responsibility to understand the
syllabus, read the textbook and present ideas, and ask me
for clarification if necessary. Evaluation measures application
of (1) course ideas and concepts; (2) analytical and evaluation
skills; and, (3) communication skills. The following factors will
determine the final grade:
1-A CLASS PROJECT.( 40%) Due
before week 10. A written project on a topic of your choice that
is related to the course. Project topic must be cleared by me no
later than week 2. Paper is to use primary as well as secondary
data and to follow behavioral and social science design. Paper must
be written according to APA style. In terms of format, paper should
include:
a). Table of Contents.
b). Body with appropriate references.
c). Conclusions.
d). References.
Topic must be applied in nature. It must have focus and depth.
Although length of paper will vary, it is expected that an average
length paper should be about 6-7 pages.
2- A MID-TERM EXAM. ( 30%). Given
during week 5. It covers the chapters from 1 to 8.
3- A FINAL EXAM. (30%). Given
during week 10. It covers the chapters from 10 to 17.
Note: Both exams consist of multiple
choice and essay questions.
Grading Scale for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail

Late Work: Late work is not acceptable.
All assignments must be completed during the assigned times. If
a conflict exists and there is an acceptable justification for it,
you are responsible to contact me about making up the work.
Late assignments/works automatically lose one(1) letter grade. Make
ups need to be completed within one week of the missed deadline.
Extra Credit: There is no extra
credit work available.
Communications and feedback policy:
Do not hesitate to communicate with me. Remember, I am here to assist
you in meeting your goals for this course. I prefer communicating
through email. However, I am also available for conversation by
phone if you would like. Our classroom for this course has a “chat”
room. I can meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request.
From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in
this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group
chats. You will receive more detailed information if such chat sessions
are scheduled. When emailing, always include your name and the course
name in your email message to me, as I may not recognize your email
name.
Feedback Policy: I respond to
any e-mail within 24 hours or less. Weekends I reserve the right
to wait until Monday to respond.
