SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to MNG 950 a Doctorate Level course in the curriculum for the Doctorate in Cultural Issues in Management. This course will highlight intercultural cooperation and its importance for survival.

People of other countries, of another generation, social class, job or organization, often think and act in ways that puzzle us. To these people, of course, we are the ones who behave in a surprising manner. What separates them from us is the culture in which we grew up. "Culture" in this sense is not the same as "civilization"; it encompasses much more. Deeply-rooted and, therefore, often unconscious values lead us to consider as normal what others think abnormal, as polite what to others is rude, and as rational what others find irrational.

Organizational cultures are a different phenomenon; they do not follow the same dimensions, are more manageable, and in fact offer an opportunity to bridge national cultures. Differences in belief systems, values, and customs require dramatically different approaches for establishing the comfort level required for a profitable business relationship. In this course, you will identify the circumstances in which organizational cultures can be managed effectively, and outline ways of learning intercultural communication.

You will acquire the essential cross-cultural competence to comfortably and successfully operate in a variety of global settings

From a presentation of the aspects of culture that consistently impact business transactions to specific managerial actions to resolve difficulties and even avoid them altogether, the Doctorate in Cultural Issues in Management will help you manage today's multicultural organization and conduct business in today's increasingly global marketplace.

TIME FRAME: This is a six-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the six-week period.
