Introduction

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Herbology NHC-580, a 4 semester-hour course. Herbology is the oldest and only natural form of medicine known to mankind in every culture throughout the world .   It includes herbs, plants, bark, fruits, berries, flowers, roots, leaves and grasses, all of which are used medicinally and nutritionally. Herbal medicines date back to Biblical and other historical literature. There are several types of herbal medicine systems that are used today; European, Native American, Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western herbalism are the most prevalent systems. Learn how to use herbs to care for your own health, your family's health, or start an herb consulting health career of your own. Earning a living as an herbalist may be done in the comfort of your own home.

In addition to required reading assignments, the course project assignment will include working with actual herbs with the purpose of making salves, liniments, teas, cosmetics, hair and scalp products, oral hygiene products, douche solutions, etc. Each student will also experiment with herbal baths such as a romatherapy bathing, grapefruit detox bath, grapefruit seed extract bath, honey bath, and vinegar (apple cider) detox bath. To ensure that learning is as simple and effective as possible, all course content is clearly presented in easy-to-understand terms.

TIME FRAME: This is a 4 semester-hour course. Upon completion you will be awarded four semister hours worth of credit. You have ten weeks to complete this course.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS: In addition to required reading assignments, the course project assignment will include working with actual herbs with the purpose of making salves, liniments, teas, cosmetics, hair and scalp products, oral hygiene products, douche solutions, etc. Each student will also experiment with herbal baths such as a romatherapy bathing, grapefruit detox bath, grapefruit seed extract bath, honey bath, and vinegar (apple cider) detox bath.

An open-book proficiency Mid-term examination is required. The minimum passing score is 70%. It is due within 6 weeks after enrolment in the course.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

91-100%    = A
81-90%      = B
71-80%      = C
Below 70% = Failed

Identify hundreds of herbs, including the scientific name of herbs, parts of the herb used, Phytochemical and nutrient content of herbs, Actions and uses of herbs, Specific facts about each herb, targeting Medicinal herbs by their actions for various body systems, the healing power of herbs, buying herbal remedies.
2). Use herbs medicinally in the form of essential oils, extracts, plasters, co mpresses, poultices, powders, salves, ointments, creams, syrups, teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, vinegars and wines.
3). Experiment with herbal baths.

5). Specific comments about each herb.
6). Medicinal herbs by actions and targets in the various body systems.
7). Healing power of herbs.

9). Using herbs medicinally in the form of essential oils, extracts, plasters, compresses, poultices, powders, salves, ointments, creams, syrups, teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, vinegars and wines.
10). You will also experiment with herbal baths such as a romatherapy bathing, grapefruit detox bath, grapefruit seed extract bath, honey bath, and vinegar (apple cider) detox bath.
