SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course focuses on issues related to Transcultural Nursing in the areas of human caring, theory, research and practice. You are tested on major concepts/theory related to multiple dimensions of transcultural issues and care. Core content includes the history of transcultural nursing, as well as issues of cultural beliefs, practices, values and implications for nursing practice. Students will study common beliefs and health care practices from many different cultures. This course also covers information related to consultation in transcultural nursing, as well as administration, research and issues for the future.

TIME FRAME: This is a four-semester hour course. This course is allotted fifteen weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the fifteenth week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your text book(s) have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification.  Please refer to the school’s student policy manual in the Resource Center for the established policy regarding exceeding time in a course.

TEXTBOOK: There is one (1) required textbook for this course.

EXAMINATIONS: There is one final examination for this course. The examination will be an objective-type test of multiple choice and true/false questions. The final examination must be taken by the end of the 15th week in the course. The examination is programmed and is located in the classroom for this course. Full instructions for taking the final examination are provided in the online classroom.

GRADING SCALE: The grading scale for this competency examination is:

90%-100%   = A
89%-80%     = B
79%-70%     = C
Below-70%   = Fail

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. However, I am also available for conversation by telephone. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions are scheduled.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are written assignments required for this course. Full information is provided in the online classroom.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Dominick L. Flarey, Ph.D., MBA, RN-BC, FACHE, is a professor at Breyer State University. He holds a BSN degree, a Masters in Business Administration, a Masters In Health Science Education, and Ph.Ds in Nursing Administration and Management. He is a Registered Nurse and a Certified and Licensed Adult Nurse Practitioner. He has held positions as Associate Administrator Patient Care, Chief Operating Officer, and Administrator in acute care. He has also held positions with several national health care consulting firms and has conducted many administrative consulting projects. He is also a Certified Specialist in Legal Nurse Consulting and continues to consult on medical malpractice cases across the country. As an Adult Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Flarey has experience in emergency care and primary care.
Dr. Flarey is formerly the Editor-in-Chief of a journal in Healthcare Law, Ethics & Regulation. He lectures extensively across the country on management and clinical issues in health care, as well as law and ethics. He is certified in Nursing Administration Advanced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.

He is the co-author/editor of seven texts books in health care, and has authored over sixty articles in peer-reviewed journals.

8. Define and discuss the components of an effective cultural care assessment.
9. Explain the concept of the integration of generic and professional health care.
10. Discuss the biocultural basis of transcultural nursing.
11. Define and discuss issues related to cultural diversity and ethical and moral care.
12. Discuss the theory of the culture of nursing.
13. Identify dominant comparative core features of the American culture of nursing.
14. Discuss other cultures of nursing, Australian, British, and Canadian.
15. Identify and discuss various transcultural foods, functions, beliefs and practices.
16. Discuss issues related to health care practices in non-western cultures.
17.  Describe the theories of transcultural mental health nursing.
18. Define the major issues related to transcultural nursing care and health perspectives of HIV/AIDS.
19. Discuss Leininger’s Culture Care theory.
20. Identify and discuss pressing issues related to legal aspects of transcultural nursing.
21. Define and discuss Anglo-American culture care.
22. Discuss issues related to Arab Muslims and Culture Care.
23. Discuss issues related to African Americans and Culture Care.
24. Discuss several issues related to family violence and Culture Care.
25. Describe care delivery for elder care in Urban Namibian families.
26. Discuss issues related to culture care of the Mexican American family.
27. Discuss Philippine Americans and Culture Care.
28. Discuss culture care theory of elderly Polish Americans.
29. Discuss transcultural nursing among Native Americans.
30. Discuss Japanese Americans and Culture Care.
31. Discuss issues of culture care of Jewish Americans and Russian Jews.
32. Discuss culture of care issues in India.
33. Identify trends and issues in Canadian transcultural nursing.
