This course is designed, consistent with the role of the Master's prepared nurse, to advance the practitioners knowledge beyond the baccalaureate level- to no longer simply accept what is, rather, to question why. Research is a major force in nursing. Through Nursing Research, many innovations and changes have occurred in practice, education and health policy. The Master's prepared nurse is expected to not only understand the research findings, but should be capable of generating new research.

For the purpose of this course, there will be no written examinations which rely upon rote-mode memorization. I am interested in your ability to interpret course content and apply it to practical situations.

The grading for this course is as follows:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C

Dominick L. Flarey, Ph.D, MBA, RN,CS, FACHE, is President of Breyer State University. He holds a BSN degree, a Masters in Business Administration, a Masters in Health Science Education, and PhDs in Nursing Administration and Management. He is a Registered Nurse and a Certified and Licensed Adult Nurse Practitioner. He has held positions as Associate Administrator Patient Care, Chief Operating Officer, and Administrator in acute care. He has also held positions with several national health care consulting firms and has conducted many administrative consulting projects. He is also a Certified Specialist in Legal Nurse Consulting and continues to consult on medical malpractice cases across the country. He has taught many seminars related to case management over the past 8 years. He also practiced as a case management consultant in a national health care consulting practice.
Dr. Flarey is the past Editor-in-Chief of a journal in Healthcare Law, Ethics & Regulation. He lectures extensively across the country on management and clinical issues in health care, as well as law and ethics. He is certified in Nursing Administration Advanced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.
He is the co-author/editor of 7 texts books in health care, and has authored over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

You must be enrolled in the MSN degree program at Breyer State University and have completed NRS 500 & 501.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1). Discuss the evolution of research and measurement in clinical nursing practice.
2). Describe the various aspects related to the research process.
3). Select research designs appropriate to a given area of inquiry.
4). Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to discover contemporary work in a given, defined area of nursing practice.
5). Identify 'gaps' in your chosen area of theoretical nursing inquiry.
6). Select appropriate statistical measures to answer different levels of research questions.
7). Plan a research project based on the current body of knowledge in a given area of nursing practice, based on individual learner interests.
8). Explain the process by which a nurse can obtain financial support for research activities.
