Case Management Process course is designed to acquaint you with the fundamentals. The course work will center on case management organizational structure, program development, utilization management, legal considerations, discharge planning and measurements. The course assignments will enhance the application to practice for mid-level management. After successful completion of the course, you will possess a deeper understanding of case management processes and its application to delivery of health care services as well as current marketplace trends.
This course is a graduate level course and is formatted to be self-directed. As your instructor, I am available for one-on-one consultation. Methods of communication between us can be via email and telephone appointments. The course completion time limit follows the university’s policy of not less than four weeks and not to exceed ten weeks.
Course work required for successful completion is comprised of weekly assignments and two projects. The text readings form the basis to complete the weekly assignments and the two projects.
This is a six-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day, which you notify me that your textbook(s) have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of tie are permitted, unless the student has good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded six semester hours of credit.

a letter grade based on your overall achievement. The grading scale
is as follows:
90–100% = A
80–89% = B
70–79% = C
60–69% = D
Below 60% = F
Weekly assignments are graded as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
Projects are
equally weighted at 50% of course grade.

2). Understand principles of utilization management.
3). Understand common definitions used in the payer environment.
4). Understand the regulatory requirements that govern use of health
care services.
5). Understand patient rights and legal aspects as related to case
management activities.
6). Understand the role of case management and discharge planning
activities.
7). Understand level of care criteria and its application to care
planning throughout the continuum of care.
8). Understand concepts of cost accounting its application for decision
support.
Paula Lenhart, RNC,
MSN, CNS, CM-C is the system care management director for Memorial
Hermann Hospital System which is part of Memorial Hermann Healthcare
Systems located in Houston, Texas. Ms. Lenhart earned an Associate
of Art-Science in Nursing at St. Mary’s Junior College and
Bachelor of Science, major in Nursing at the University of Minnesota
located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She earned her master of science-nursing
degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston,
School of Nursing. The area and role specialization is as a neonatal
clinical nurse specialist.
Ms. Lenhart holds certifications in neonatal intensive care nursing
and case management. She is a member of the National Association
of Neonatal Nurses and is active in the local neonatal nursing chapter.
She has held numerous positions on the Houston Area Association
of Neonatal Nurses Executive Committee. Ms. Lenhart also serves
as a board member for the American Academy of Case Management.
Ms. Lenhart has twenty years of nursing experience and has held
positions such as staff nurse, unit educator, nurse clinician, case
manager and mid-level manager.
