SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to this course on patient education in nursing practice, a graduate level course in the Nursing Education Track of the MSN program. Patient education is a role that all practitioners have in their daily work to some degree. This course will acquaint the advanced practice nurse with fundamentals of learner characteristics, motivation, and evaluation of learning, as well as preparation for the delivery of education in particular practice settings.

Whether the nurse educator is preparing to use this course to set up a program, to prepare materials, to enter a teaching/learning dyad, or to evaluate the effectiveness of various learning encounters, this course will provide sufficient background and current examples to be of benefit in educational planning and practice.

I trust this will be a meaningful and exciting journey for you, the nurse educator, and for your future students in the realm of nursing and those colleagues, clients and communities who will benefit from advanced nursing practice.

TIME FRAME: This is a six-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded six semester hours of credit.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam. The mid-term exam consists of a 10-12 page essay based on the textbook and current practice. The final exam consists of a 10-12 page essay based on the textbook and selected journal articles.

The mid-term examination must be completed by the end of the 5th week in the course.

The final examination must be completed by the end of the 10th week in the course.

The directions for both exams (papers) are located in the classroom for this course. Upon completion, send the exam to your instructor via email as indicated.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There are two written assignments in this course that comprise the midterm exam and the final exam. Please use an accepted academic style when composing your papers (such as APA or MLA). Your papers should be well-edited and use grammar and composition suited for graduate level work. Documents should be submitted as attachments in Word or rtf format. If you are using WordPerfect or Works, please save your documents in "rtf" format that is found in the Save as menu. Thanks.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Dale is an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at a large traditional university in the US, and has enjoyed additional adjunct affiliations with many traditional and non-traditional colleges and universities over the past several decades. She is currently conducting a research study in nursing education that involves the ways that reflection can assist graduate and undergraduate nursing students to learn the rigors of nursing research at their various levels of practice. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, and is a frequent presenter at national and international nursing education conferences. She holds a Doctorate of Education from Pepperdine University, an MSN from St. Joseph''s College of Maine, an MS in Clinical Psychology from California State University at Long Beach. She is board certified in Nursing Administration, Advanced, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Uopn completion of this course you will be able to:

1). Describe the components of sound educational practice.
2). Examine the ways that effective teaching and learning theory can be applied to various educational encounters and populations.
3). Integrate the components effective teaching in specific clinical settings or special populations.
4). Critique current practices in specific clinical settings or with special populations.
