NRS 553 - Management for the APN in the 21st Century

SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is specifically designed for the APN who is in the MSN Completion Program. This course challenges the graduate student to management concepts that will be a driving force in succeeding in the 21st Century as an APN. This course is an in-depth study of the concepts and challenges of CHANGE as presented by Peter F. Drucker. The application of the concepts of this course by the APN will be critical for success.

TIME FRAME: This is a three hour Graduate Nursing Course. You are allotted ten weeks to complete all requirements for this course. The first day of the course begins the day that you have registered or the day that you have received the textbooks for the course. Time management is crucial in any you are taking. Upon completion of this course you will be awarded three hours of credit.

TEXTBOOKS: The following textbooks are required for this course.

Book 1: American Psychological Association. (5th Ed). Publication manual of the american psychological association. Washington, DC.

Book 2: Management Challenges for the 21st Century. Drucker, P.F. NY: HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. 2001

Book 3: Harvard business review on change. Harvard Business Review. Boston: Harvard Business School Press. 1998

EXAMINATIONS: The Final Exam for this course will be an Essay question. You will focus on the impact of Drucker on Novice to Expert as written by Patricia Benner. Keep in mind that Benner applied the management principles of Dreyfus. The final essay question will be completed online during the last week of the course. You can consider the essay an open book exam and utilize whatever resources are available during the session. The Final Test is 30% of the overall grade for the course.

Since I require weekly contact by you the weight of the contacts is 10% of the overall grade for the course.

GRADING:

90-100%    - A
80-89%      - B
70-79%      - C
Below-69% - Fail

COMMUNICATION: You are expected to communicate with me on a weekly basis. Email is the primary means of communication for this course. That does not mean that you cannot use regular mail or the telephone should the need present itself. I am available to facilitate your successful completion of the requirements for this course. It is imperative that any changes in email addresses be shared to avoid any problems in contacting each other.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Bill Emmerling, EdD, FNP-c, RHIA is your instructor for this course. Dr. Emmerling is a retired USPHS Commissioned Nurse Officer (06) and is a Primary Care Provider and the Internal Health Information Administrator Consultant at the Paiute Health and Human Services Clinics in Las Vegas and Moapa, Nevada. He has over 30 years of professional experience in private, state and federal positions.

GETTING STARTED: As soon as you have enrolled in the course and received the required textbooks for the course you may begin the course work. It is important to inform me of the start date or any reason for delaying the start of the course. You are expected to complete all requirements with in the specified time frames.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1). Discuss the challenges and issues as described by Peter Drucker relative to CHANGE
2). Describe the attributes of the Leaders of Tomorrow as noted by Peter Drucker.
3). Differentiate between the Issues and the Challenges.
4). Define who is the Individual Knowledge Worker.
5). Utilize the terminology of the author correctly.
6). Teach others about the teachings of Drucker as they relate to CHANGE.
7). Explain what ACTION should organizations, knowledge workers and executives take to make challenges into OPPORTUNITIES.
8). Compare and contrast the teachings of Drucker relative to CHANGE.
9). Manage Oneself.
10). Be ahead of Change.
11). Apply the principles of CHANGE TO Advanced Practice Nursing.
