Masters of Science in Nursing Completion Program

NRS 555 - Culminating Project

Instructor: WILLIAM PAUL EMMERLING, EdD, FNP-C, RHIA, LFACHE

SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course allows you to apply graduate study skills to explore an area of clinical nursing practice, nursing education or nursing administration. You develop specific learning objectives and completes the tasks for meeting those objectives by utilizing a learning contract.

The culminating project has two components. The first component is the development of the learning objectives and goals. You discuss the objectives and goals of the culminating project and designs a learning contract. The contract will serve as the plan for what will constitute the culminating project. The contract should be completed as soon as possible so that you have sufficient time to complete the contract within the time frame of this course.

The contract allows you to pursue a project that is of particular interest to you. Some possible ideas for a project might be:

1). Writing a grant proposal for your clinical setting.
2). Writing a research proposal.
3). Designing and implementing a staff education program.
4). Developing a specialty clinic for a specific patient population.
5). Evaluating or developing a budget for the health care setting.

(It is unlikely that you will have the time to complete an in-depth research project in the time allotted for this course. The proposal is an excellent way to hold yourself accountable to embark on research once you have completed your graduate studies. Be realistic in what can be accomplished. I do expect you to demonstrate graduate level competency.)

TIME FRAME: This is a three hour course. Ten weeks are allotted for you to complete the requirements of both parts of this course. Unless there is valid justification you are expected to meet the time frame for completion of all requirements. Upon completion of all of the requirements you will be awarded three hours of credit.

TEXTBOOKS: The following textbooks are required for this course.

Book 1: American Psychological Association. (5th Ed). Publication manual of the american psychological association. Washington, DC.

Book 2: The Craft of Research. Booth, W.C., Colomb, G.G., Williams, J.M. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. 2003

Depending upon the project you are choosing the texts, periodicals, online searches and other documents will vary. Needless to say whatever the project involves there must be
adequate sources to support the documentation of your project.
